Through decades of hands on leadership, Shawn has helped develop one of the most advanced vegetation management programs in the country, overseeing thousands of miles of critical infrastructure while aligning regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship. He believes true transformation happens not through vision alone, but through trusted relationships, clear communication, and the ability to meet people where they are, whether in the boardroom or in the field. Shawn’s approach combines industry-leading best practices, emerging technologies, and a deep respect for nature to foster ecosystems, protect communities, and reduce operational risk.

Shawn lead a comprehensive vegetation management program spanning a diverse five-state footprint, overseeing operations across approximately 13,000 corridor miles of transmission rights-of-way and 269,000 miles of distribution lines. His leadership ensures strategic alignment, safety, and regulatory compliance across this vast and complex utility network. His program transformations such as centralizing vegetation operations across multiple jurisdictions have enhanced coordination, transparency, and accountability while exceeding NERC and PUC regulatory requirements. Under his direction, FirstEnergy launched industry first initiatives like Closed Chain of Custody protocols, which improved safety, minimized environmental impact, and yielded $18 million in savings.

Shawn is also a champion of technological integration in utility operations. He has led the deployment of cutting edge tools including LiDAR, remote sensing, data analytics, and risk based work models. His focus on translating innovation into actionable field level impact has modernized FirstEnergy’s vegetation management practices, improving decision making, optimizing budgets, and enhancing both contractor and employee safety. His efforts in mechanized solutions and data informed herbicide strategies have redefined performance benchmarks across terrain and task types.

Beyond operations, Shawn has been instrumental in aligning vegetation management with broader organizational goals of sustainability and environmental stewardship. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM), habitat preservation, and evidence based decision making principles he has championed through his involvement in industry research and standard-setting initiatives, including the landmark SGL 33 study with Penn State and partnerships with EPRI and the Pennsylvania DCNR.

A Penn State graduate with a degree in Forest Science, Shawn has served in ascending leadership roles within FirstEnergy, from Forestry Specialist to executive director. His previous experience includes foundational roles at Consumers Energy and Bartlett Tree Experts, where he gained hands on understanding of field operations, risk management, and customer-focused service. This breadth of experience equips him with a unique ability to bridge executive strategy with ground level execution.

Shawn’s commitment to ethical leadership, stakeholder engagement, and people development is evident in every role he has held. He is an advocate for mentorship, having guided the next generation of utility professionals, and a collaborative leader who builds trust across regulatory bodies, environmental groups, contractors, and internal teams. His pragmatic, people first approach has earned him respect across the utility landscape and positioned him as a thought leader in sustainable infrastructure, corporate governance, and risk management.
