Published on:

Shawn O’Grady is an accomplished mental health clinician, executive leader, educator, consultant, therapist, and keynote speaker whose career has been dedicated to understanding how people function, connect, recover, and perform when faced with complexity and pressure. With more than 28 years of professional experience, Shawn has built a multidisciplinary career spanning mental health services, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, organizational leadership, quality assurance, risk management, education, public engagement, and family systems. His work is united by a central conviction: healthy connections can fundamentally improve the way individuals, teams, families, and organizations navigate challenge and achieve meaningful outcomes.

Shawn’s professional foundation combines social work, clinical specialization, leadership, and an early education in law and security administration. He earned a Law and Security Administration Diploma from Algonquin College before completing his Bachelor of Social Work with Distinction and Master of Social Work with a Clinical Specialization at the University of Calgary. His education provided a framework for a career that would increasingly bring together human behavior, organizational systems, safety, communication, and leadership. Rather than approaching mental health as an isolated clinical issue, Shawn has developed an integrated perspective on how relationships, environments, policies, culture, and organizational practices influence human well-being.

A significant chapter of Shawn’s leadership career unfolded at Hull Services in Calgary, where he progressed through increasingly senior responsibilities involving quality assurance, clinical governance, trauma-informed services, and therapeutic programming. His positions included Director of Quality Assurance & Support Services, Clinical Director across multiple specialized programs, and ultimately Senior Director of Therapeutic Campus-Based Care, Group & Continuing Care. Across these roles, Shawn oversaw clinical governance and accreditation processes, advanced policy and quality-improvement initiatives, supervised interdisciplinary professionals, and supported services addressing some of the most complex needs faced by children, adolescents, and families. This experience strengthened his ability to connect front-line realities with executive-level decision-making and organizational strategy.

Throughout his career, Shawn has developed substantial expertise in trauma-informed practice and the ways stress and adversity affect behavior, relationships, decision-making, and performance. His advanced professional development has included extensive training with Dr. Bruce Perry and the Child Trauma Academy in the Neurosequential Model, as well as certifications and training connected with Collaborative Problem Solving, Multidimensional Family Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children. These experiences have enabled Shawn to translate sophisticated clinical and neuroscience-informed concepts into practical approaches that leaders, professionals, parents, educators, coaches, and organizations can apply in real-world environments.

Education and professional development have remained central to Shawn’s impact. Through his work with Cornell University and the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research, he has delivered instruction in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and provided consultation and coaching related to trauma-informed practice and evidence-based therapeutic frameworks. His connection to Therapeutic Crisis Intervention extends back more than two decades, reflecting a sustained commitment to equipping professionals with tools for responding safely and effectively when individuals are experiencing distress. He also serves as a clinical instructor with the RIEL Institute for Education and Learning, teaching subjects that include trauma-informed practice, human services, diversity with families, and therapeutic theories, methods, and models.

Shawn has complemented his organizational and educational leadership with extensive direct clinical practice. Through Shawminika Clinical Services, he has worked with individuals, couples, and families on trauma, attachment, emotional regulation, family systems, parental capacity, relationship conflict, and complex mental health concerns. He has also served as a Crisis Clinician with TELUS Health, providing critical incident stress management, crisis counselling, trauma response, and stabilization services. His experience has additionally led to recognition as a qualified expert witness in the Provincial Court of Alberta in areas including children’s mental health, domestic violence, parental capacity assessment, and family therapy, underscoring the depth and credibility of his professional expertise.

As Shawn’s career has evolved, his focus has expanded beyond clinical treatment toward entrepreneurship, organizational consulting, leadership development, and broader community impact. As the owner of Confident Parenting North America and through his ongoing clinical and consulting work, he is applying decades of experience to help people build healthier relationships, respond more intentionally under pressure, and create environments in which individuals can function at their best. His interests increasingly intersect with business development, technology, public healthcare, mental health services, workplace culture, and sports performance and health—areas where understanding human behavior and organizational dynamics can provide significant strategic value.

Shawn is also an experienced keynote speaker, presenter, and trainer who has addressed audiences across mental health, education, child and family services, sports performance, parenting, crisis intervention, workplace wellness, trauma, emotional regulation, and professional resilience. His communication style is grounded in making complex ideas understandable, relatable, and immediately useful. Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, family systems theory, crisis intervention, leadership experience, and decades of front-line practice, Shawn helps audiences understand not simply what effective strategies look like, but why they work and how those strategies can be applied when circumstances become difficult. His mental health expertise has also led to media exposure, including participation in a mental health documentary and appearances or quotations in news coverage.

His experience in quality assurance, occupational safety, risk management, conflict resolution, crisis response, and organizational culture gives Shawn a perspective that extends naturally into governance and advisory leadership. He understands that strong organizations require more than policies and performance metrics; they require environments where communication, accountability, psychological awareness, sound risk practices, and healthy relationships reinforce one another. Shawn brings the ability to examine organizational challenges through both a human and operational lens, helping leadership teams consider how decisions affect employees, clients, families, communities, reputation, service quality, and long-term organizational resilience.

Shawn’s commitment to community impact is also reflected through his involvement with I Got Mind, a Canadian sports and mental health organization. The intersection between mental health and sports performance is particularly aligned with his belief that emotional regulation, preparation, connection, and resilience influence performance under pressure. Whether working with an athlete, family, clinical team, executive group, or community organization, Shawn consistently focuses on helping people understand the factors influencing their responses so they can make more deliberate, constructive decisions.

Recognition throughout Shawn’s career further reflects his commitment to professional excellence and service. His honors have included the Hull Services Spirit of Diversity Award, the George Roy Excellence in Training Award, multiple academic scholarships, and recognition as Child and Youth Care Counsellor of the Year for the Province of Alberta. These distinctions span training, diversity, academic achievement, and direct service, illustrating the breadth of a career defined not by a single specialty but by an enduring commitment to improving outcomes for people and the systems that support them.

Now entering a new chapter of his professional journey, Shawn is intentionally pursuing opportunities to contribute at the board and advisory level. After decades spent building clinical expertise, leading teams, educating professionals, responding to crises, strengthening programs, and developing his own businesses, he sees governance as an opportunity to give back while diversifying the ways he can create impact. He is particularly positioned to contribute to organizations operating in mental health and related services, public healthcare, technology, business development, and sports performance and health, while remaining open to opportunities where his expertise in people, culture, risk, communication, and organizational resilience can advance a meaningful mission.

At the heart of Shawn’s leadership philosophy is the value of creating and maintaining healthy connections. He believes people are better equipped to navigate uncertainty when they understand themselves, understand one another, and recognize what happens to human behavior and decision-making under stress. That philosophy has guided his work with vulnerable families, professionals, organizations, athletes, educators, and leaders alike. As a board or advisory contributor, Shawn offers a distinctive combination of clinical depth, executive leadership, governance awareness, teaching ability, crisis expertise, and human-centered strategic thinking—qualities that can help organizations strengthen both their performance and the people responsible for achieving it.
