Ron’s professional foundation was built at the intersection of electrical engineering, communications technology, and commercialization. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Communications from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he developed expertise in communications systems, remote telemetry, and meter-reading technologies. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into ETA KAPPA NU (the Electrical Engineering Honor Society) and TAU BETA PI (the Engineering Honor Society) During his years with Base Ten Systems, Ron advanced into senior leadership roles including Vice President of Engineering and Vice President of Marketing, combining technical development with market strategy. His work contributed to patented communications systems and devices for remote telemetry, meter reading, and alarm security applications, and he ultimately received multiple U.S. patents. This early combination of engineering, product development, customer needs, and commercialization would become a defining characteristic of his executive career.
As the utility and telecommunications industries evolved, Ron expanded his leadership responsibilities into sales, marketing, strategic consulting, and business development. At Bell Atlantic, he served as Director of Sales and Marketing for utility systems, and his subsequent work included utility telecommunications consulting and strategic advisory assignments. At AT&T Solutions, he held several senior positions spanning utility consulting, network outsourcing sales, and device management services. His responsibilities included developing network-centric services for embedded machine-to-machine systems, building go-to-market strategies, securing significant networking outsourcing agreements, and supporting major management consulting engagements. These experiences strengthened Ron’s ability to translate sophisticated technologies into viable business strategies while building relationships among utilities, technology providers, communications companies, and other stakeholders.
Ron continued broadening his influence through senior roles with organizations including Comverge, PA Consulting Group, and DNV/KEMA. At DNV/KEMA, he served as Vice President and head of the North American AMI/Smart Grid consulting practice, where he consistently met or exceeded consulting revenue objectives exceeding $4 million annually. He advised major utilities and suppliers on AMI, distribution automation, demand response, smart grid strategies, technology roadmaps, regulatory considerations, and business cases. His work included engagements with organizations such as Con Edison, PSE&G, Orange and Rockland, LG&E, Vectren, Nashville Electric Service, and other utilities. He also provided strategic direction to suppliers seeking to enter or expand within the utility marketplace, giving him firsthand experience in the challenges companies face when commercializing new technologies within a complex and highly regulated industry.
His career subsequently moved even deeper into the transformation of the modern electric grid. As a founding member of Schneider Electric’s Utility Consulting Services organization, Ron helped utilities adopt emerging technologies and improve the processes required to manage business and operational change. His work included leading the implementation of a microgrid at Schneider Electric’s North American headquarters, developing technology and business transformation roadmaps, advancing distribution automation solutions, and supporting innovative microgrid initiatives. He later joined Verizon Enterprise Services as a Distinguished Solutions Architect focused on utility and energy IoT, helping develop opportunities involving IoT platforms, advanced metering, distribution management, cloud-based capabilities, and secure communications infrastructure. These positions further established Ron as a bridge between traditional utility operations and the rapidly expanding worlds of connected devices, telecommunications, cloud services, analytics, and intelligent infrastructure.
At EnerNex, where he served as Vice President of Grid Modernization, Ron brought decades of operating and consulting knowledge to increasingly complex utility transformation initiatives. His work addressed sensor strategies, telecommunications governance, microgrids, grid modernization, distributed energy resources, data architectures, 5G applications, operational technology, cybersecurity considerations, and the integration of modern information systems with critical infrastructure. His assignments included work supporting Con Edison, Southern California Edison, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, and international modernization initiatives supported by the World Bank. One particularly expansive engagement examined telecommunications infrastructure supporting regional energy coordination across 14 countries in Western Africa, illustrating the international relevance of Ron’s expertise and his ability to work across technological, organizational, and geographic boundaries.
Since establishing Chebra Consulting Group, Ron has continued applying his experience to strategic advisory, technology commercialization, market development, and specialized subject-matter engagements. He has advised emerging technology companies on identifying utility customers, aligning products with industry requirements, developing future product roadmaps, creating market awareness, and establishing customer advisory groups. He has also supported technology and data analytics businesses seeking to expand their presence, including helping a French company pursue opportunities within the U.S. marketplace. For companies attempting to navigate the highly specialized energy and utility ecosystem, Ron brings not merely a network of relationships, but an understanding of how utilities evaluate technologies, manage risk, justify investments, respond to regulatory requirements, and implement meaningful transformation.
His expertise has also become valuable in highly complex dispute-resolution and expert-witness matters. In a recent international engagement, Ron was retained by a legal firm as a subject-matter expert concerning an Advanced Metering Infrastructure project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The assignment required reviewing approximately 2,000 pages of documentation, developing a formal written opinion, and providing testimony before a tribunal. In another dispute-resolution engagement, he evaluated issues involving premature equipment failures, procurement, deployment, operations, and root-cause considerations associated with automatic meter-reading devices. These assignments demonstrate an important dimension of Ron’s professional capabilities: his ability to analyze extensive technical and operational evidence, identify critical issues, form defensible conclusions, and communicate sophisticated technical matters in environments where clarity and credibility are essential.
Beyond his executive responsibilities, Ron has developed a significant record of industry leadership, board participation, writing, and public speaking. His leadership with Utilimetrics/AMRA included service as President, Board Member, and chair of multiple committees, while his broader industry involvement has included advisory roles associated with DistribuTech, T&D World, the Electric Light & Power Executive Forum, IEEE, and other professional organizations. In 2026, he was elected to the GridWise Architecture Council, which was formed by the U.S. Department of Energy. His industry contributions also include numerous articles and publications addressing smart grids, AMI, IoT, microgrids, demand response, energy data, electrified transportation, and grid modernization. He has appeared as a keynote speaker, presenter, panelist, moderator, instructor, podcast host, and webinar participant before technical, executive, regulatory, and industry audiences.
Ron’s value in the boardroom extends beyond his technical credentials. Throughout his career, he has participated in strategic growth, business development, marketing, commercialization, partnership formation, organizational transformation, and the expansion of emerging businesses. He has experienced the challenges associated with helping companies grow from entrepreneurial beginnings into substantially larger organizations, including involvement with a business that expanded from approximately five employees to more than 250. This operating perspective enables him to engage constructively with founders and executive teams while maintaining the broader strategic viewpoint expected of a board member or advisor.
