“Engineering Practical Solutions for a Smarter Supply Chain”

With over five decades of visionary leadership and hands-on technical expertise, Robert L. Doniger has cemented his legacy as a trailblazer in materials handling and supply chain engineering. His journey is characterized by a relentless drive to transform complex warehousing and distribution challenges into streamlined, integrated systems that fuel operational efficiency and long-term growth for companies across North America.

Robert’s career began shortly after earning his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. From the onset, he demonstrated an intuitive grasp of systems thinking—understanding how moving parts must align to deliver precision and performance in logistics environments. This skill, coupled with a deep appreciation for emerging technologies, positioned him as a forward-looking engineer at a time when the warehouse automation revolution was just beginning.

By the early 1990s, Robert had risen to the role of Executive Vice President at International Material Handling, Inc., a position that would define his strategic acumen and entrepreneurial spirit. He spearheaded business development, led end-to-end systems design, and managed key partnerships. Under his leadership, the company gained renown for its innovative Garment-on-Hanger (GOH) systems—solutions that revolutionized productivity for garment wholesalers and retailers alike.

His desire for autonomy and innovation led Robert to establish Doniger Systems Design, Inc. in 1998. Over the next eight years, he engineered major warehouse transformations, including a 2,000,000 sq. ft. multi-facility for a leading 3PL client and the expansion of a Manhattan-based loft into a high-capacity distribution center. His design strategies routinely delivered measurable ROI, such as a 33% capacity increase for a restructured garment distribution hub.

A hallmark of Robert’s professional journey has been his adaptability to changing technologies and market dynamics. At companies like SI Systems, DEMATIC, and KNAPP, he designed systems that integrated advanced automation, vertical carousels, AMRs, pick-to-light systems, and more. His client-centric approach always began with data analysis—translating operational pain points into elegant engineering solutions.

As a senior consultant at Swisslog and RSM US LLP, Robert’s thought leadership bridged engineering and enterprise software. At RSM, he worked alongside the Dynamics 365 ERP team, ensuring that warehouse operations and customer needs were seamlessly integrated into system configurations—exemplifying his ability to translate technical insights into business value.

Robert’s depth of experience reached its peak during his tenure at Slate River Systems, Inc., where he served as Senior Program Manager. There, he was entrusted with leading multi-million-dollar distribution center projects. His work ranged from the design of a highly automated beverage distribution center with a $100M budget to agile AMR-based solutions for mid-market clients. He integrated next-gen technologies like RAFT (Right Angle Fast Transit), Quicktron AMRs, and gantry-based picking systems—pushing the boundaries of what distribution networks could achieve.

Beyond his technical skills, Robert’s leadership philosophy has been rooted in mentorship, clear communication, and collaborative problem-solving. Whether advising internal teams or presenting to clients, he has always emphasized clarity of purpose and commitment to delivery. His strategic vision, combined with decades of tactical execution, has consistently earned the trust of colleagues and clients alike.

Though semi-retired, Robert remains deeply engaged with the industry. Through Doniger & Associates, he continues to consult on warehousing challenges and advise younger companies navigating the increasingly complex fulfillment landscape. His passion for engineering solutions that are both scalable and cost-effective makes him an invaluable asset to advisory boards, particularly in warehousing, retail, 3PL, and automation-driven sectors.

Outside of his professional commitments, Robert finds joy in music, regularly singing in choirs—an endeavor that reflects his appreciation for harmony, discipline, and teamwork. His personal mission is simple yet profound: to keep contributing, stay connected to innovation, and help the next generation of businesses get it done right—the first time.
