Rob Ashdown is a senior energy executive, entrepreneur, investor, and strategic leader with more than 20 years of professional experience spanning clean energy, infrastructure, financial markets, energy trading, project development, and corporate strategy. His career has been defined by an ability to operate at the intersection of complex markets, emerging technologies, capital, and leadership. From building businesses and investment platforms from inception to guiding multidisciplinary teams and advising governments and major institutions, Rob has developed a perspective that combines commercial discipline with a deep understanding of the global energy transition. He is particularly experienced in the National Electricity Market (NEM), battery energy storage systems (BESS), wholesale energy markets, portfolio optimisation, derivatives, project finance, risk management, and renewable energy development.
A significant chapter of Rob’s entrepreneurial career was the creation of the Clean Energy Transfer Fund (CETF), which he founded and led as CEO and Managing Director before subsequently serving as a Director. He built CETF from inception into an approximately 250MW NEM energy trading fund with more than $100 million in net asset value. His responsibilities extended across the entire investment and operating lifecycle, including AEMO participant registration, Austraclear, AFSL authorisation, ASX Energy futures clearing, portfolio construction, P&L management, liquidity and risk oversight, and investor reporting. Rob also executed power purchase and offtake agreements with counterparties including Acciona, AGL, and Pacific Blue while overseeing forward contracts, swaps, structured products, and OTC derivative exposures. Just as importantly, he recruited and coached a team of trading and quantitative professionals, demonstrating his capacity to build both sophisticated commercial platforms and the teams required to operate them successfully.
Rob has continued to apply that entrepreneurial mindset to the rapidly evolving battery storage sector. As Founder and Managing Director of Hive Battery Developments, he has led the structuring of a portfolio of ten sub-5MW BESS projects, each designed at approximately 4.98MW/10MWh, across New South Wales. His leadership has encompassed commercial structuring, technology partnerships, grid connection requirements, project development, and complex multiparty negotiations. Through this work, he has demonstrated an ability to take technically challenging infrastructure opportunities and move them toward commercially viable, investment-ready outcomes while balancing the priorities of developers, technology providers, counterparties, network stakeholders, and investors.
His technology and market innovation experience is further reflected through Tukio Intelligent Infrastructure, where Rob designed and built a dispatch optimisation platform for sub-5MW battery assets. The platform was conceived to enable BESS assets to dynamically navigate scheduled and non-scheduled NEM trading while accessing opportunities including regulated Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS), the Reliability and Emergency Reserve Trader (RERT) mechanism, and OTC strategies. Tukio was also among the early applicants under AEMO’s SCADA Light programme, placing Rob at the forefront of efforts to expand the commercial and market capabilities of distributed battery assets. Rob has also held significant enterprise leadership responsibilities. As Chief Business Officer at Enervest, he led approximately 35 people across development, energy markets, engineering, and operations as the organisation progressed from an early-stage developer toward an independent power producer model. His remit included board and shareholder reporting, strategic planning, commercial alignment, performance management, customer strategy, energy-market leadership, and investment decision support. The role reinforced a leadership philosophy developed throughout his career: successful strategy must ultimately translate into coordinated execution, accountable teams, commercially sound decisions, and measurable results.
Before his entrepreneurial ventures in Australia, Rob developed extensive international experience across energy, infrastructure, finance, and risk. At Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, he established and led weather and energy derivative activities for Africa, the Middle East, and India, carrying P&L responsibility and originating solutions including parametric wind-revenue hedging products for renewable energy projects. He also led work examining wind hedging opportunities across the Americas, Europe, China, and Australia. Earlier, at Cennergi, the Exxaro and Tata Power joint venture, Rob worked across project development, transaction structuring, due diligence, valuation, debt and equity structuring, strategic partnerships, and market-entry initiatives throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Among his notable project achievements was contributing to and leading work associated with the successful financial close of the 135MW Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Farm.
Rob’s career foundation also encompasses climate strategy, sustainability, government policy, and international development. He has provided advisory services through organisations including PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Bank Group and served as an External Policy Advisor in Australia on climate-related policy matters. In South Africa, his work in carbon markets included advising financial institutions and contributing recommendations concerning the taxation of Certified Emission Reductions, with his work forming part of broader developments in the country’s carbon-market framework. These experiences gave Rob exposure not simply to energy projects as commercial assets, but to the policy, environmental, regulatory, and social forces that shape markets over the long term.
His professional credibility is complemented by a multidisciplinary academic and technical background. Rob holds a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Zoology and a BSc Honours in Ecology, Environment and Conservation from the University of the Witwatersrand. His continuing professional development has included finance and accounting studies through Wits Business School, general management training through the Gordon Institute of Business Science, infrastructure finance and investment studies through Università Bocconi, advanced environmental reporting training, and lead-auditor qualifications relating to international management standards.
