“Helping organizations rise by elevating quality, mitigating risk, and building trust—every step of the way.”

Rick Vance is a seasoned executive leader whose career has been built on a foundation of precision, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. For over 25 years, he has guided product development, risk mitigation, and quality assurance initiatives in high-stakes industries—most notably in the outdoor equipment and fall protection sectors. With a unique blend of technical expertise, business strategy, and global experience, Rick has consistently helped organizations evolve from operational adequacy to industry-leading performance. His leadership style combines deep-rooted analytical thinking with a people-first approach, making him a transformative force in any boardroom or executive suite.

Rick’s early career began in service to the nation as a Mechanical Engineer with the U.S. Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. Here, he refined his ability to navigate complex systems and develop solutions under pressure. This role not only solidified his mechanical engineering credentials from Widener University but also instilled in him the discipline and systems-thinking that would become hallmarks of his leadership philosophy. It was during these formative years that Rick began to understand the intersection of design, reliability, and risk—an understanding that would define his contributions to industry over the next two decades.

In 2002, Rick transitioned into the private sector as a Senior Research Engineer at the Harold K. Dunn Orthopaedic Research Laboratory. This pivot allowed him to delve deeper into technical innovation and product performance, working in a highly regulated and safety-sensitive environment. His time in orthopedic research sharpened his data analysis skills, broadened his understanding of human-centered design, and reinforced his commitment to product integrity—attributes that would later become essential as he entered the outdoor equipment industry.

Rick’s leadership truly came into its own during his nearly eight-year tenure at Petzl America, where he served as Technical Director. In this role, Rick was the public face of product performance, managing the Petzl Technical Institute and liaising with national standards bodies. He was instrumental in shaping Petzl’s technical communications and represented the company in product safety and performance forums throughout North America. His ability to convey complex technical details in accessible language not only positioned Petzl as a trusted leader in the market but also established Rick as a credible and respected voice in risk management and technical product development.

His accomplishments at Petzl caught the attention of Black Diamond Equipment, where he was appointed Vice President of Quality. Over nearly five years, Rick led Black Diamond’s global quality systems, overseeing compliance with ISO 9001 and CE certification standards. He developed and implemented robust risk assessment strategies that encompassed both internal manufacturing and third-party vendors. Rick’s tenure at Black Diamond was marked by continuous improvement initiatives that led to measurable gains in product reliability and customer satisfaction. His leadership reinforced the company’s reputation for uncompromising quality in a highly competitive market.

Rick’s most recent corporate role was as Senior Director of Quality at NEMO Equipment, where he spent over three years driving business process innovation and budget optimization while upholding the highest standards of product quality. His role at NEMO was not confined to the manufacturing floor; it extended to strategic planning, organizational development, and team building. Rick’s influence reached across departments, embedding quality thinking into the DNA of the organization. His ability to bridge technical disciplines with strategic imperatives made him an invaluable member of the senior leadership team.

Outside of his corporate accomplishments, Rick has contributed significantly to industry governance and nonprofit leadership. As Chairperson of the Board for both the Climbing Wall Association and the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to community, safety, and sustainability in climbing and outdoor recreation. Through these roles, Rick has shaped industry policies, strengthened organizational capacity, and fostered inclusive growth. His board experience reflects his belief that leadership is not about control—it’s about stewardship, collaboration, and impact.

Rick’s global experience is both broad and deep. From Central Europe and France to the Philippines, Japan, Cambodia, and across Asia, he has worked with international teams and suppliers, ensuring compliance, quality, and alignment with diverse regulatory environments. His global exposure has enriched his cultural competency and informed his approach to leading cross-functional, geographically dispersed teams. This international perspective is especially valuable in today’s interconnected business landscape, where understanding regional nuances can determine success or failure.

Personally, Rick is as multifaceted as he is professionally accomplished. A passionate musician and high-level climber, he brings creativity, discipline, and resilience to every endeavor—on and off the mountain. His involvement with the American Mountain Guide Association reflects not just a personal passion but a deep respect for standards, mentorship, and lifelong learning. Rick sees parallels between climbing and leadership: both require preparation, trust, adaptability, and a commitment to reaching new heights.

Today, Rick Vance seeks to bring his vast experience and wisdom to the boardroom. He is drawn to mission-driven organizations that are poised for transformation—those who need a steady hand, a strategic mind, and a values-based leader to help them scale. With a preference for companies in the $300-400 million range, Rick offers an ideal combination of entrepreneurial agility and enterprise-level rigor. He is ready to partner with boards to refine strategy, elevate performance, and unlock long-term value.
