His career reflects a consistent track record of leadership, innovation, and value creation across multiple industries, with a particular focus on senior living, real estate investment, and corporate finance. Rick has been a principal investor in transactions exceeding $15 billion and has cultivated a reputation for both operational insight and strategic foresight, making him a sought-after advisor and board member.
Rick began his professional journey as a senior consultant at Andersen Consulting, where he developed a strong foundation in strategy, business processes, and risk management for financial services clients. This early exposure to complex business environments equipped him with analytical rigor and a problem-solving mindset that would inform his career in investment and operational leadership. Seeking to deepen his financial expertise, Rick earned an MBA in Real Estate Finance from Columbia Business School, complementing his BA in Economics from Tufts University.
Following his graduate studies, Rick joined Lazard as a real estate investment banker, where he quickly distinguished himself in strategic advisory and asset-level transactions. He transitioned into Lazard Real Estate Partners, the firm’s private equity arm, where he became a principal and partner. During his tenure, he led transformative initiatives for portfolio companies, including restructuring, balance sheet optimization, and strategic growth for Atria Senior Living. Rick’s work at Lazard included investing in over $1 billion in senior living properties, multi-family housing, and extended-stay hotels, in both public and private market transactions, consistently delivering top-decile returns for investors.
Rick’s expertise in senior living led him to Atria Senior Living, where he served as Executive Vice President, Chief Investment Officer, and Head of Business Development. At Atria, Rick was instrumental in scaling the organization from 125 to approximately 250 communities, partnering with more than 15 institutional owners and overseeing nearly 90 acquisitions and management transitions. His leadership extended beyond operational execution to strategic capital initiatives, including a major management buyout and a growth recapitalization with Fremont Capital, positioning the company for sustained expansion. Under Rick’s guidance, Atria’s revenue under management increased by 2.5 times, and profitability grew exponentially, reflecting his ability to align financial discipline with operational excellence. He also oversaw the firms balance sheet management, and was responsible for the all development project acquisitions and financing.
In 2020, Rick became Chief Executive Officer of Aventine Senior Living, overseeing all aspects of the regional Southeast and Texas senior living operating company affiliated with Palatine Capital Partners. During his tenure, he successfully orchestrated the merger of Aventine into Sonida Senior Living, demonstrating his capacity to execute complex strategic transactions while preserving value for stakeholders. Concurrently, Rick served as a senior advisor to Palatine, providing strategic counsel on healthcare real estate investments and growth initiatives. His role in this dual capacity reinforced his reputation as a leader capable of balancing operational management with investment acumen.
In 2019, Rick founded Atlas Investments and Advisory, a firm dedicated to strategic investment and advisory services in real estate, healthcare, and technology. Through Atlas, he has led investments and restructuring projects in retail and light industrial real estate. He has also provided guidance and capital to early-stage and growth-stage companies, including Sage, a healthcare delivery optimization platform; Tembo Health, a dementia and telehealth network for senior living facilities; TSO Life, an AI-driven platform for resident and prospect insights; and SilverBills, a fintech solution for senior financial management. Rick’s work with these companies reflects a commitment to innovation, operational efficiency, and the application of technology to solve real-world challenges in healthcare and senior living.
Rick’s professional influence extends beyond corporate leadership to governance and board service. He has served as a director for ASLH, the holding company of Atria, as well as for captive insurance companies Charles Channel Indemnity and Mystic River Indemnity. Additionally, he contributed to Camp Ramah in the Berkshires as Vice President and Treasurer, demonstrating his commitment to community and nonprofit leadership, chairing both its finance and development commitees.
