His career is defined not only by technical expertise but by a steady dedication to building systems and strategies that endure.
Beginning his career in the maritime industry, Pete developed a strong technical foundation as an engineer, working his way up to a USCG Chief Engineer’s license (unlimited horsepower, steam & diesel plants) in six years. During this time he gained invaluable hands-on experience in vessel operations and engineering systems, sailing on numerous sea going vessels, including the 288 meter (946’) Military Sealift Command ship (USNS Algol) as well as a number of cable laying ships for Transoceanic Cable Ship Co. This laid the groundwork for a career that would expand across continents and disciplines. His early work instilled in him a disciplined, solutions-oriented mindset that continues to shape his leadership approach.
Pete’s career progressed significantly during his eight-year tenure at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where he served as an engineer supporting advanced oceanographic missions. This role allowed him to engage with cutting-edge marine technology and research, further deepening his expertise in subsea engineering and vessel operations. It also marked the beginning of his involvement in mission-driven organizations focused on scientific discovery and environmental understanding.
He continued to build on this momentum at Oregon State University, where he held roles as both Port Engineer and Marine Superintendent. Over nearly six years, Pete managed vessel maintenance, regulatory compliance, and operational logistics for the Colleges research fleet. His ability to align technical operations with institutional goals distinguished him as a leader capable of bridging engineering rigor with academic and research priorities. He served as chair of the UNOLS Research Vessel Operating committee, as well as serving in the Safety Committee.
Pete’s leadership trajectory reached new heights during his time with the Schmidt Ocean Institute, where he served as Marine Operations Manager and Marine Engineering Manager. In this capacity, he oversaw global vessel operations, ensuring the successful execution of international research missions. His work required coordination across diverse teams, cultures, and regulatory environments, reinforcing his adaptability and global perspective.
Transitioning into facilities leadership, Pete brought his operational expertise to Hawaiian Building Maintenance as Chief Engineer before assuming the role of Facilities Director at Linn-Benton Community College. In these positions, he expanded his scope to include campus-wide infrastructure management, capital improvement planning, and strategic resource allocation. His ability to manage complex systems translated seamlessly into the higher education environment, where he drove initiatives that enhanced operational resilience and sustainability.
Throughout his career, Pete has demonstrated a strong aptitude for budgeting, long-term planning, and strategic development. His leadership style emphasizes thoughtful decision-making, stakeholder collaboration, and a clear vision for organizational growth.
