Patrick McKinney: Building Trust Through Security, Innovation, and Leadership

Published on:

Patrick McKinney is an accomplished cybersecurity executive, technology strategist, and security operations leader with more than twenty years of experience building and scaling security, compliance, governance, and information technology programs for some of the world’s most recognizable technology companies. Throughout his career, Patrick has established a reputation for transforming security from a compliance requirement into a strategic business enabler. His expertise spans enterprise security, artificial intelligence governance, identity and access management, privacy, fraud prevention, product security, cloud infrastructure, and executive risk management, making him a trusted advisor to executive leadership teams, boards of directors, and high-growth organizations navigating increasingly complex security challenges.

Patrick currently serves as Vice President of Security & IT at Invisible Technologies, where he became the organization’s first dedicated security executive after the company had already surpassed $130 million in annual recurring revenue. Rather than simply maintaining existing operations, he architected an enterprise-wide security organization from the ground up, building a twenty-person team while implementing seven major compliance frameworks in just eighteen months. His leadership encompasses every critical aspect of modern enterprise security, including application security, governance, risk and compliance, privacy operations, fraud management, cloud security, physical security, and enterprise IT. Equally important, Patrick has positioned security as a competitive advantage by partnering directly with customers, executive leadership, and the board of directors to communicate risk, drive confidence, and support business growth.

One of Patrick’s defining strengths is his ability to bridge innovation with operational excellence. Recognizing the transformative impact of artificial intelligence, he has led initiatives that leverage AI to automate threat detection, incident response, vulnerability management, compliance workflows, and IT operations. By combining automation with thoughtful governance, Patrick has consistently improved organizational efficiency while maintaining rigorous security standards. His work demonstrates that effective cybersecurity leadership is not simply about protecting systems—it is about enabling organizations to move faster, innovate confidently, and reduce operational friction through intelligent design.

Patrick’s entrepreneurial mindset is equally evident through his advisory work with emerging technology companies including Lunar Aspect, Borneo, and Opal. Serving as one of the first advisors to multiple startups, he has helped founders refine product strategy, pivot market direction, improve security capabilities, influence product roadmaps, strengthen customer acquisition efforts, and introduce companies to strategic partners and enterprise customers. His guidance extends beyond cybersecurity into product management, customer success, sales enablement, and executive strategy, reflecting his broad understanding of how security supports long-term business value.

Patrick previously spent more than four years at Coinbase, where he built one of the organization’s first dedicated compliance engineering teams and expanded its responsibilities to include first-line risk management, trust engineering, and enterprise eDiscovery. Under his leadership, the organization became a model for proactive compliance operations while supporting legal, infrastructure, mergers and acquisitions, security, product development, and regulatory examinations. He successfully guided his teams through rapid organizational growth, an initial public offering, international expansion, and significant organizational restructuring while maintaining operational excellence. His work established industry-leading practices that have since influenced how modern technology companies approach compliance engineering.

Earlier in his career, Patrick held influential program management and governance positions at Dropbox and Salesforce, where he played pivotal roles in building foundational security and compliance programs. As a founding member of Dropbox’s Risk and Governance team, he led first-year SOX and GDPR initiatives while helping establish organizational governance processes that supported global growth. At Salesforce, he contributed to the company’s FedRAMP Authority to Operate initiatives, oversaw security aspects of European data center expansion, managed complex global infrastructure programs, and collaborated with engineering teams across North America, Europe, and Asia. These experiences provided him with an exceptional understanding of large-scale cloud infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and enterprise transformation.

Patrick’s educational foundation reflects his lifelong commitment to technology and leadership. He earned both his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Security and his Master of Science in Information Technology Project Management and Leadership from George Mason University. Complementing his academic achievements, he earned the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) credential, reinforcing his technical expertise and dedication to the highest standards of cybersecurity leadership. Throughout his career, Patrick has consistently invested in mentoring, education, and community engagement, including volunteering as a tutor and life coach for students preparing for higher education.

Today, Patrick McKinney is recognized as a forward-thinking executive who combines deep technical expertise with strategic business acumen. His career reflects a rare ability to build organizations from the ground up, guide companies through periods of hypergrowth, and translate complex security challenges into practical business solutions. Whether advising startups, leading global security organizations, or briefing executive leadership and boards, Patrick consistently demonstrates that effective security leadership is rooted in trust, collaboration, innovation, and measurable business outcomes.
