Mitchell Billek is an accomplished financial services executive and board leader whose career spans approximately four decades across banking, capital markets, accounting, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and financial management. A retired CPA with an MBA in Finance and former FINRA Series 7 and Series 27 licenses, Mitchell has built his professional reputation by navigating complex financial environments, strengthening control frameworks, advising senior leadership, and helping organizations make sound decisions amid changing regulatory and market conditions. Having recently transitioned from a distinguished executive career into retirement, he is now focused on applying that depth of experience to board and advisory opportunities where thoughtful oversight, financial discipline, and seasoned judgment can create lasting value.
Mitchell concluded his full-time corporate career at Mizuho Securities USA and Mizuho Capital Markets, where he spent more than fourteen years and ultimately served as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer. As CFO, he held financial leadership responsibility for five regulated entities while also serving as Finance Head for several non-regulated companies. His mandate extended across financial accounting, regulatory reporting, product control, capital management, tax compliance, audited financial statements, accounting policy, and the broader control environment. Operating within a highly regulated financial ecosystem, Mitchell worked extensively with the Federal Reserve, SEC, CFTC, FINRA, CME, NFA, external auditors, internal auditors, and senior executives, developing a sophisticated understanding of the intersection between business strategy, financial stewardship, risk, and regulatory expectations.
His leadership at Mizuho went well beyond traditional financial reporting. Mitchell helped optimize capital and resource allocation across business divisions, supported due diligence initiatives associated with acquisitions and product expansions, and contributed to major transactions, including the approximately $9 billion purchase of mortgage-backed securities from Credit Suisse. He was a member of numerous senior committees, including Risk, Financial Risk, Asset & Liability, New Products, and Global Finance committees, while also participating in SIFMA’s Regulatory Capital & Margin and Global Financial Institution committees. He led or supported major technology and control initiatives involving general ledger and derivatives subledger conversions, operational reconciliations, management accounting standardization, Dodd-Frank requirements, and global Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. These experiences strengthened his ability to evaluate complex opportunities through multiple lenses—financial, regulatory, operational, technological, and strategic.
Before joining Mizuho, Mitchell held senior financial leadership positions with several of the world’s most prominent banking and capital markets organizations. At Barclays Capital, he served as Director and Head of U.S. Financial Reporting, overseeing legal entity and financial accounting for a broker-dealer with an approximately $300 billion balance sheet as well as branches, special purpose vehicles, and holding companies. Managing a team of approximately 35 professionals across multiple locations, he oversaw month-end close, consolidation, disclosure, audits, and regulatory reporting under U.S. GAAP and IFRS. During a pivotal period for the financial industry, he also played a role in integrating Lehman Brothers businesses and financial reporting personnel into Barclays, participating in activities ranging from due diligence and opening balance sheet accounting to ongoing systems conversions.
At Bank of Montreal, Mitchell served as Director and Product CFO for the New York Capital Markets division, supporting businesses spanning cash equities, research, fixed income, equity derivatives, stock loan, investment banking, and structured products. In that capacity, he combined technical financial expertise with a highly collaborative approach to business partnership. He managed budgeting, forecasting, monthly reporting, and daily profit-and-loss processes while acting as a senior Finance relationship manager to New York-based business heads. His work required more than accurate numbers; it required translating financial information into insights executives could use, resolving cross-functional accounting and operational issues, and helping develop technology solutions that improved business reporting, client profitability analysis, and management decision-making.
Mitchell’s earlier years at Deutsche Bank and Lehman Brothers further developed the breadth that would define his later executive leadership. At Deutsche Bank, he served in director-level roles encompassing entity control, global balance sheet management, consolidations, treasury responsibilities, regulatory reporting, and financial analysis. He created processes for analyzing the global balance sheet across institutional and retail asset management, real estate, and hedge fund activities and was responsible for more than 30 legal entities. His projects included Bankers Trust acquisition filings, improvements to accounting close cycles, and work associated with the German parent company’s transition to U.S. GAAP in connection with its New York Stock Exchange listing. At Lehman Brothers, he served as Vice President and Division Controller, gaining additional experience with investment portfolios, special purpose entities, financial reporting, accounting standards, and control processes.
The foundation for Mitchell’s career was established at PricewaterhouseCoopers, formerly Coopers & Lybrand, where he progressed to Audit Manager. That experience instilled a disciplined approach to financial integrity, controls, audit readiness, and accountability that remained central throughout his career. Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University with a double major in Accounting and Economics and later completed his MBA in Finance at Rutgers. His professional credentials have included a New Jersey CPA designation, now retired, and FINRA Series 7 and Series 27 licenses, also retired. He further expanded his executive perspective as a graduate of the SIFMA Securities Industry Institute at Wharton in 2018.
International exposure has been another defining element of Mitchell’s professional perspective. Over the course of his career, he worked within or alongside major financial institutions connected to Japan, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This experience required an appreciation for differences in regulatory regimes, accounting practices, corporate cultures, governance expectations, and decision-making structures. Working across global organizations taught him how to balance local business realities with enterprise-wide priorities and how to communicate effectively among executives, finance teams, regulators, auditors, and other stakeholders with different objectives and perspectives.
Mitchell also brings meaningful firsthand board and governance experience. Since 2023, he has served on the board of JobsFirstNYC, an organization focused on creating and advancing solutions that help young adults pursue economic opportunities. His responsibilities have included serving as Treasurer and leading accounting and audit responsibilities across multiple affiliated entities. He has worked with the CFO and Executive Director on expansion into new geographic markets and has provided oversight and support related to annual audits, budgets, financial statements, tax returns, and organizational financial management. His board experience has allowed him to apply the rigor of a career in regulated financial services within a mission-driven governance environment while reinforcing the importance of constructive challenge, accountability, and responsible stewardship.
Throughout his career, Mitchell has regularly presented to boards, committees, executive teams, auditors, regulators, and business leaders. He is comfortable distilling complex financial and regulatory matters into information that decision-makers can understand and act upon, and he remains open to participating in panel discussions where his experience can contribute meaningfully to the subject at hand. His leadership philosophy has been shaped by years of recruiting, developing, and motivating talented professionals while building relationships across Finance, Operations, Risk, Technology, front-office businesses, executive management, and corporate functions. He understands that effective leadership depends not simply on subject-matter expertise but on earning credibility, asking the right questions, listening carefully, and helping diverse stakeholders move toward a shared objective.
Now retired from full-time executive leadership, Mitchell views board service as a natural continuation of his professional journey rather than a departure from it. Retirement has given him the opportunity to consider where his experience can have the greatest impact, and he remains deeply interested in financial services while also seeing technology as an attractive secondary area for board involvement. He brings particular value to organizations facing growth, regulatory complexity, financial transformation, capital allocation decisions, audit and control challenges, new product development, acquisitions, or the need to professionalize financial and governance processes. Having experienced financial markets from the perspectives of auditor, controller, product CFO, corporate finance leader, regulated-entity CFO, committee member, and board member, he can approach strategic questions with an unusually broad frame of reference.
At this stage of his career, Mitchell is motivated by the opportunity to give back the knowledge accumulated over decades while remaining connected to industries where disciplined leadership and experienced judgment matter. He believes that strong boards should do more than review historical performance; they should help organizations anticipate risk, challenge assumptions, recognize opportunities, and build the foundations for sustainable success. His combination of technical financial expertise, regulatory fluency, international banking experience, operational understanding, governance exposure, and executive communication equips him to contribute meaningfully to those conversations. For Mitchell, board service represents an opportunity to remain intellectually engaged, support leadership teams, and help organizations benefit from lessons learned across an extensive career at the highest levels of global financial services.
