“Semi-Working, Not Semi-Retired.”
Mark J. Allen is an accomplished technology executive, engineering leader, entrepreneur, and trusted advisor whose career spans more than 45 years at the forefront of the computing revolution. From the days of IBM mainframes and punch cards to today’s rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and enterprise SaaS solutions, Mark has consistently remained ahead of technological change while helping organizations transform ambitious ideas into scalable business solutions. His unique ability to bridge legacy systems with modern architectures has made him an invaluable leader for organizations seeking both innovation and operational excellence. Guided by his personal philosophy of “Everything in moderation” and his commitment to “getting things done as quickly and efficiently as possible,” Mark combines technical mastery with practical business leadership.
Mark’s professional journey began during the earliest stages of enterprise computing, where he developed expertise in IBM mainframe technologies, COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, and large-scale business systems. Rather than becoming defined by a single generation of technology, he continually embraced each wave of innovation, mastering client-server environments, database administration, enterprise software development, cloud computing, backend engineering, mobile applications, web applications, and modern artificial intelligence technologies. This lifelong commitment to continuous learning has allowed him to remain both technically relevant and strategically valuable throughout one of the most transformative periods in the history of information technology.
Today, Mark serves as the Owner of MJ Allen Group, LLC, where he provides executive consulting services as a Fractional CIO, Fractional CTO, System Architect, Database Administrator, and Backend Python Developer. In these roles, he works closely with startup founders, executive teams, and investors to design scalable technology strategies that support growth, funding initiatives, and long-term business success. His work extends far beyond technical implementation, encompassing executive technology leadership, software architecture, infrastructure planning, database optimization, and strategic guidance for organizations seeking to leverage emerging technologies to gain competitive advantages.
Throughout his consulting career, Mark has become particularly recognized for helping startup companies transform innovative concepts into production-ready solutions. His expertise spans artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, GPS applications, mobile development, full-stack engineering, cloud-native architecture, serverless computing, enterprise databases, and SaaS platforms. By combining decades of enterprise experience with an entrepreneurial mindset, he provides companies with executive-level technical leadership that accelerates growth while minimizing operational risk. His ability to evaluate technology through both engineering and business lenses makes him an exceptional advisor for organizations navigating today’s increasingly complex digital landscape.
Prior to launching his consulting practice, Mark served as Vice President of Engineering at TeMeDa, where he directed all server-side engineering operations, SaaS platform development, software architecture, infrastructure management, and performance optimization. Leading globally distributed development teams throughout the United States and internationally, he successfully coordinated engineering, product management, and sales organizations to deliver enterprise-grade software solutions that met demanding customer expectations. His leadership emphasized collaboration, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and the adoption of emerging technologies that positioned the company for long-term success.
One of the defining chapters of Mark’s career was his more than eleven-year tenure with Trimble Navigation and its predecessor, @Road, where he advanced through numerous executive leadership positions including Senior Database Administrator, Manager of the Advanced Customer Solutions Group, Director of Professional Services USA, Global Director of Technical Services, Product Manager, and Global Engineering Manager for the Telecommunications Division. During this period, he helped oversee extraordinary organizational growth as the company’s subscriber base expanded from approximately 12,000 users to well over 200,000 globally. His leadership encompassed engineering, professional services, sales engineering, customer implementations, telecommunications integrations, and enterprise software deployments supporting industry leaders including Verizon, DirecTV, CenturyLink, Cox Communications, SBC, Qwest, and Waste Management. He also played a pivotal role in launching Trimble’s SaaS scheduling engine and enterprise service bus architecture, establishing a foundation for future product integrations and continued innovation.
Mark’s technical expertise is matched by his ability to lead diverse, geographically distributed organizations. Throughout his career, he has successfully managed engineering and technical services teams across the United States, England, India, Australia, and Pakistan while delivering mission-critical solutions for enterprise customers worldwide. His international leadership experience has strengthened his appreciation for cross-cultural collaboration and his ability to build high-performing teams regardless of geography. Whether managing software engineers, product managers, sales organizations, or technical consultants, Mark consistently creates environments where innovation, accountability, and customer success thrive.
Beyond engineering leadership, Mark has built an impressive reputation as a business strategist and technology evangelist. His experience includes product management, database architecture, software design, cloud computing, application development, customer engagement, enterprise integrations, and executive consulting. He has contributed to numerous patent-related innovations throughout his career and has been quoted for his technical expertise. He has also shared his knowledge publicly, presenting GPS technology at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference and engaging with industry professionals on emerging technologies. His ability to translate highly technical concepts into practical business solutions has earned him the trust of executives, customers, and investors alike.
Mark remains deeply committed to supporting innovation beyond his professional responsibilities. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce, helping strengthen the regional business community through strategic leadership and governance. He also volunteers with The Job Forum of San Francisco, assisting professionals as they navigate career opportunities and workforce transitions. In addition, he serves as a Fractional CTO for several startup organizations while contributing to business development initiatives for Gaper and Daika.ai, companies focused on AI engineering, technical talent, and advanced computational systems. These roles reflect his enduring passion for mentoring entrepreneurs, helping businesses grow, and advancing the future of technology.
As he explores additional corporate board opportunities, Mark is motivated not by retirement, but by his continued enthusiasm for innovation and solving meaningful business challenges. He often describes himself as “semi-working, not semi-retired,” a phrase that perfectly captures both his energy and his outlook. Having experienced every major era of modern computing—from mainframes and relational databases to cloud-native applications, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and next-generation software platforms—he offers boards a uniquely comprehensive perspective on technology governance, digital transformation, cybersecurity awareness, product strategy, and organizational growth. His remarkable combination of technical depth, executive leadership, entrepreneurial experience, and genuine curiosity positions him as an exceptional advisor for organizations seeking thoughtful governance and visionary technology leadership in an increasingly digital world.
