Marc Doss, J.D., CFA, CFP, is an investment executive, fiduciary, former board trustee, and U.S. Naval Officer whose career spans more than three decades of leadership across asset management, private wealth, financial services, retirement planning, and institutional governance. Over the course of his career, Marc has built a reputation for bringing disciplined financial analysis together with sound judgment, collaborative leadership, and a deep commitment to stewardship. Having retired from his full-time executive career with Wells Fargo in June 2026, he is focused on applying the perspective accumulated throughout his career to for-profit and nonprofit organizations seeking strategic insight, financial oversight, investment expertise, and experienced governance. His interests extend across finance, technology, healthcare, and other industries where thoughtful leadership and responsible decision-making can create enduring value.
Marc concluded his corporate career as Managing Director of Asset Management with Wells Fargo Private Bank and its Family Office Team. In this capacity, he managed approximately $4 billion in assets for a select group of highly customized ultra-high-net-worth portfolios spanning public equities, fixed income, real assets, hedge funds, and private capital. His responsibilities encompassed asset allocation, portfolio construction, implementation, rebalancing, manager evaluation, risk oversight, and performance communication. Working alongside relationship managers, financial planners, trust officers, portfolio professionals, attorneys, CPAs, and investment consultants, Marc approached wealth management holistically, recognizing that sophisticated financial decisions often require the integration of investment, fiduciary, tax, legal, and family considerations. He also regularly presented perspectives on the global economy, capital markets, portfolio strategy, and investment performance to clients and boards.
Before joining the Family Office Team, Marc served for approximately a decade as Regional Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director for Wells Fargo Private Wealth Management’s Western Region. The region represented approximately 30 percent of the organization’s Private Wealth Management revenue, placing Marc in a senior leadership position within the business. He led a team of approximately 50 investment strategists and portfolio managers as well as six Regional Investment Managers while helping oversee approximately $150 billion in assets across private wealth and brokerage offerings. As a senior investment spokesperson, Marc communicated investment strategy to clients and prospective clients, participated in major client engagements, interacted with local and national media, and authored investment publications. His leadership extended beyond market perspectives into talent recruitment, retention, mentorship, portfolio risk management, and the development and implementation of investment policies.
Marc’s Wells Fargo leadership journey also included service as Senior Director of Investments and Regional Investment Manager. As Senior Director, he led the investment management business and investment professionals throughout the Southwest Region, collaborating with senior executives to communicate strategy, strengthen investment results, develop professionals, support major client relationships, and reinforce disciplined risk-management and compliance practices. As Regional Investment Manager, he led investment activities across San Diego, the Inland Empire, and Palm Desert while maintaining relationships with sophisticated clients and working with internal and external partners to expand the investment management business. These roles strengthened an executive leadership philosophy centered on accountability, collaboration, professional development, disciplined execution, service to clients and partners, and risk management.
Earlier in his career, Marc held progressively senior investment and wealth-management positions with several highly regarded financial institutions. He served as Managing Director and co-head of Lehman Brothers’ Newport Beach office, where he helped lead the business and managed important client relationships with assets exceeding $300 million. Before Lehman Brothers, he was Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager with U.S. Trust, overseeing more than $800 million in client assets and advising agency, trust, retirement, endowment, and investment-management relationships. His responsibilities included financial planning, asset allocation, investment policy development, performance review, and the selection of strategies across traditional and alternative investments. He previously served as Senior Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager with Banc of America Capital Management and as Vice President and Portfolio Manager with Northern Trust, further developing his expertise in portfolio construction, investment strategy, client advisory services, and team leadership.
The foundation of Marc’s financial career was built through roles spanning retirement planning, employee benefits, investment management, and client service. At Mercantile National Bank, he served as an Investment Officer and Employee Benefit Trust Officer, managing equity portfolios and supporting pension, profit-sharing, 401(k), IRA, and trust relationships. He also conducted due diligence on external investment managers and delivered investment education and asset-allocation seminars. Earlier, as a Team Leader with William M. Mercer, he led a six-person team providing retirement-plan administration services for Fortune 500 organizations. His work as a Retirement Planning Specialist with Dean Witter Reynolds further broadened his experience in financial planning, security selection, asset allocation, portfolio management, and cash-flow analysis. Together, these experiences gave Marc an unusually comprehensive perspective on financial services—from individual investors and retirement-plan participants to institutional pools of capital, family offices, and ultra-high-net-worth families.
Marc also brings meaningful governance and fiduciary experience to the boardroom. From 2007 to 2013, he served as a Trustee of the San Diego County Employees Retirement Association, participating in the governance of a major public pension system and assuming the responsibilities associated with fiduciary oversight of retirement assets and benefits. He has additionally served as a voting member of investment and fiduciary oversight committees during his Wells Fargo career, contributing to investment strategy, risk-management policies, and portfolio-management practices. His professional leadership has included serving as President of the CFA Society of San Diego and maintaining affiliations with organizations including the CFA Institute, CFA Society of Seattle, and the legal profession. These experiences have shaped a governance perspective grounded in fiduciary responsibility, financial controls, prudent oversight, informed inquiry, and the obligation to consider the long-term interests of stakeholders.
Marc’s professional perspective is also influenced by his service as an officer in the United States Navy. He served on active duty at the Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet and aboard the USS Callaghan DDG 994, completing deployments around the globe and significant time deployed in the Persian Gulf. He later continued his military service in the U.S. Navy Reserve and ultimately left the service at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His military decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Naval Expeditionary Medal, and Sea Service recognition. The demands of military leadership—preparation, accountability, adaptability, teamwork, and decision-making in complex and dangerous environments—provided formative experiences that would continue to influence his approach to leadership throughout his civilian career.
His academic and professional credentials complement this extensive practical experience. Marc earned his Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law, where his activities included international law studies in London and participation as a semifinalist in the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honorary society. He subsequently earned two of the financial profession’s most respected credentials, becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional. This combination of legal education, economics, investment analysis, financial planning, and decades of practical portfolio-management experience allows Marc to evaluate complex issues from multiple perspectives.
Communication has been another defining element of Marc’s career. He has extensive public-speaking experience and has regularly presented on macroeconomics, global capital markets, portfolio strategy, investment performance, and wealth management to clients, boards, professional audiences, and prospective clients. As a senior investment leader, he interacted with local and national media and contributed written investment thought leadership. Among his published work is his co-authorship of “Addressing the New Higher Tax Realities in California: A Planning and Investment Perspective,” published by Wells Fargo in 2013. His ability to translate sophisticated investment concepts into understandable concepts has allowed him to communicate effectively with audiences ranging from investment professionals and executives to clients, trustees, and other stakeholders.
Marc has also devoted considerable time to developing people and strengthening organizations. Throughout his Wells Fargo career, he formally and informally mentored investment professionals, helped recruit and retain key talent, and served for more than a decade as a leading Wells Fargo representative at the MBA Veterans recruiting conference. His leadership style reflects an understanding that successful organizations depend not only on strong strategies and financial discipline, but also on capable people who are given opportunities to learn, contribute, and lead. His own progression from retirement planning and portfolio management into regional and enterprise-level investment leadership gives him firsthand insight into the importance of talent development, succession, organizational culture, and effective collaboration.
Now retired from his full-time corporate career, Marc is seeking opportunities to contribute his experience to boards, advisory organizations, and leadership teams. He is particularly interested in bringing his financial acumen, investment perspective, governance experience, risk awareness, and strategic judgment to organizations where those capabilities can make a meaningful difference. After decades spent managing significant pools of capital, advising sophisticated clients, leading investment professionals, and serving in fiduciary capacities, Marc views board service as an opportunity to share what he has learned while continuing to engage with new industries, business models, and leadership challenges. His background is especially relevant to organizations navigating capital allocation, financial controls, investment decisions, risk management, growth, fiduciary responsibilities, and long-term strategic planning.
Marc’s outlook extends beyond professional accomplishment to a broader commitment to service and continuous development. He brings global exposure from both his investment career and military service and has spent decades assessing how economic, geopolitical, market, and organizational developments can affect long-term outcomes. Away from professional responsibilities, Marc enjoys golf and training his dog, interests that provide balance to a career characterized by substantial responsibility and an ongoing focus on markets and leadership. As he enters this next chapter, his objective is straightforward: to put decades of accumulated knowledge to productive use by helping organizations and their leaders make thoughtful decisions, strengthen their financial foundations, manage risk responsibly, and pursue sustainable long-term success.
