“Keep Growing, Keep Learning.”
Linda Nelson is an accomplished healthcare and medical device executive whose career reflects a deep commitment to clinical excellence, thoughtful leadership, and continuous learning. With more than four decades of clinical experience spanning patient care, clinical research, medical devices, cardiology, and executive leadership, Linda brings a distinctive perspective to organizations navigating the intersection of science, regulation, innovation, and business strategy. Her career has been defined not only by the complexity of the clinical programs she has led, but also by her ability to ask meaningful questions, listen carefully to diverse perspectives, and translate clinical evidence into decisions that support patients, physicians, regulators, and businesses alike. Guided by her personal motto, “Keep Growing, Keep Learning,” she approaches every new challenge as an opportunity to contribute, develop, and help others move forward.
Linda’s professional foundation began in nursing, giving her an enduring appreciation for the human impact behind healthcare innovation. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Olaf College and later complemented her clinical education with a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas. This combination of clinical training and business education has shaped the way she evaluates organizational opportunities and challenges. She understands that successful healthcare companies must simultaneously protect patient welfare, generate credible scientific evidence, satisfy demanding regulatory requirements, allocate resources responsibly, and execute against long-term commercial objectives. Her ability to move comfortably between clinical and business considerations has become one of the defining strengths of her leadership approach.
Over the course of her career, Linda developed extensive expertise in clinical research and clinical development, particularly within the medical device and cardiology sectors. Her experience encompasses clinical strategy, protocol development, clinical trial design and execution, endpoint selection, data analysis, post-market surveillance, physician engagement, regulatory strategy, budgeting, organizational development, and cross-functional leadership. She has worked with complex FDA and international regulatory pathways, including Investigational Device Exemptions and Premarket Approval processes, while also supporting European regulatory and post-market evidence requirements. Her work has required her to balance scientific rigor with practical execution, helping organizations develop clinical roadmaps that advance regulatory objectives while remaining aligned with broader business priorities.
Linda spent a significant portion of her career with Medtronic, where she progressed through increasingly influential clinical leadership positions. As Director of Clinical Affairs within Atrial Fibrillation Solutions, she led clinical resources and teams across the United States and Canada while assuming responsibility for strategic planning, budgeting, and talent development. She helped integrate clinical activities and employees following acquisitions and played a clinical leadership role in due diligence efforts associated with two key Medtronic acquisitions that contributed to the development of a new business unit. Her teams successfully executed pivotal IDE clinical trials that ultimately supported FDA approvals, demonstrating her ability to guide highly regulated clinical programs from strategy through execution and meaningful business outcomes.
Linda later returned to Medtronic in senior clinical research leadership, ultimately serving as Senior Clinical Research Director. In this capacity, she oversaw a large global post-market surveillance strategy spanning multiple Medtronic business units. Her responsibilities included managing teams of employees and contractors, overseeing budgets and projections, developing personnel, and ensuring the availability of high-quality post-market evidence for regulatory submissions, publications, deficiency responses, expanded indications, and evolving European regulatory requirements. This work strengthened her already extensive understanding of the full medical device lifecycle and reinforced the importance of evidence generation long after a product reaches the market.
Between her Medtronic leadership roles, Linda served as Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Respicardia, later acquired by ZOLL. There, she provided executive leadership for internal and external global clinical resources, including clinical teams, field clinical engineers, contract research organizations, core laboratories, and consultants. Working collaboratively with regulatory, quality, research and development, physicians, and other stakeholders, she helped establish clinical processes and procedures and guided the successful execution of a randomized pivotal IDE clinical trial. Her leadership contributed to completion of a modular PMA submission and early FDA product approval. The experience further demonstrated Linda’s capacity to operate effectively in growth-oriented environments where clinical execution can directly influence regulatory milestones, commercialization, enterprise value, and patient access to innovative technologies.
Linda continued this trajectory as Vice President of Clinical Affairs for WhiteSwell, a medical technology company based in Galway, Ireland, and subsequently supported the organization as an independent clinical consultant. Her responsibilities included development of the clinical roadmap, clinical trial protocols, biostatistical modeling, endpoint selection, clinical organizational design, strategic planning, budget management, physician and site relationships, quality and process improvement, data analysis, and clinical reporting. Leading across these disciplines required both technical command and executive judgment. Linda worked to ensure that clinical objectives remained aligned with the company’s broader business strategy while maintaining the scientific standards and regulatory discipline necessary for credible clinical development.
Her expertise is complemented by meaningful international exposure and extensive interaction with global stakeholders. Linda has worked within global clinical programs and has professional exposure involving countries including Ireland, Georgia, and Israel, in addition to her substantial experience across the United States and Canada. Throughout her career, she has participated in company meetings, board meetings, regulatory meetings, and discussions involving physicians and specialized committees such as data safety monitoring, clinical events, and publication committees. These experiences have developed a communication style grounded in preparation, active listening, informed questioning, and the confidence to express an independent perspective when circumstances require it.
Linda’s contribution to cardiovascular and clinical research also extends into the scientific literature. She has been associated with published research addressing heart failure, vascular function, cardiac transplantation, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and atrial fibrillation. Her publication history includes work appearing in respected cardiovascular journals, and she contributed to research associated with the North American Arctic Front STOP AF pivotal trial involving cryoballoon ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. While publication has not been the focus of her more recent executive work, this scientific foundation remains an important element of the analytical rigor she brings to clinical strategy, evidence evaluation, and governance conversations.
Service and governance have likewise played meaningful roles in Linda’s professional life. She served Camp Odayin, an organization supporting children with heart disease, both as Nursing Director and as a board member, holding positions that included member-at-large, secretary, and board president. As Nursing Director, she was responsible for clinical staffing, procedures, staff training, and the care environment for young campers. She has also served as Advisory Board Chair for the Washington County Master Gardener Volunteer Program. These experiences reflect a willingness to contribute beyond traditional corporate responsibilities and demonstrate that her understanding of leadership extends from executive decision-making to community service, governance, volunteer engagement, and hands-on responsibility.
Today, Linda continues to apply her nursing background as a Licensed School Nurse with Stillwater Area Public Schools while remaining interested in opportunities to contribute her extensive executive experience at the board and advisory level. Her professional interests are particularly strong in medical devices, cardiology, clinical research, healthcare, and life sciences, although she remains open to organizations across a broader range of industries where her experience can add value. She is especially equipped to support companies facing questions involving clinical governance, clinical risk, regulatory pathways, evidence strategy, organizational development, commercialization, acquisitions, and the translation of technical information into sound strategic decisions.
Linda’s motivation for board service is rooted in a straightforward belief that decades of accumulated experience are most valuable when they continue to be shared. At this stage of her career, she has both the perspective and the capacity to become deeply engaged in a new endeavor. She understands the challenges executives face because she has managed teams, budgets, clinical programs, regulatory requirements, organizational integrations, and strategic priorities herself. At the same time, she does not view board leadership as an opportunity simply to provide answers. She values listening, asking thoughtful questions, examining assumptions, and creating constructive dialogue that helps leadership teams reach stronger decisions.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Linda is an avid hiker who enjoys the outdoors and reading. Those interests complement a personality shaped by curiosity, exploration, and lifelong development. Her personal philosophy—“Keep Growing, Keep Learning”—is more than a memorable phrase; it reflects the approach that has carried her from clinical nursing through research and multinational medical device leadership and into governance and advisory work. She brings to prospective boards a combination of clinical credibility, executive experience, regulatory understanding, strategic discipline, and a genuine desire to remain engaged in work that can make a meaningful difference.
For organizations seeking a board director or advisor who understands both the scientific details and the broader strategic picture, Linda offers a valuable combination of experience and perspective. She has witnessed healthcare innovation from the bedside, the clinical research organization, the executive suite, and the boardroom. She understands how evidence, regulation, people, capital, and strategy must work together to move promising technologies toward successful outcomes. Most importantly, she brings the judgment to know when to listen, the experience to recognize consequential issues, and the confidence to ask questions that can sharpen organizational thinking.
