“Helping Others Take Care of Patients.”

Kirk E. Thomas, MHA, LFACHE, is a respected healthcare executive, servant leader, and strategic advisor whose career has been defined by an unwavering commitment to improving patient care, strengthening healthcare organizations, and mentoring the next generation of leaders. With nearly four decades of progressive experience in hospital and healthcare operations, Kirk has earned a reputation as a thoughtful systems thinker capable of aligning clinical excellence, operational performance, and organizational strategy. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated the ability to lead complex healthcare organizations through periods of transformation while maintaining a strong focus on people, purpose, and community impact.

Born with a passion for service and a deep appreciation for the importance of compassionate healthcare, Kirk began his professional journey as a Respiratory Therapist after earning his Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy from York College of Pennsylvania. His clinical background gave him firsthand exposure to the realities of patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the operational demands of healthcare systems. Rather than remaining solely in direct patient care, Kirk quickly recognized the broader opportunities he could have to influence healthcare outcomes through leadership, operational strategy, and organizational development. That realization would become the foundation for a distinguished executive career spanning nearly forty years.

Kirk’s early leadership experience at Lewistown Hospital laid the groundwork for his future executive success. Beginning as a staff therapist, he steadily advanced through supervisory and management positions within respiratory therapy and cardiopulmonary services. During these formative years, he developed a practical understanding of hospital operations, departmental leadership, budgeting, staffing, and quality improvement initiatives. His ability to lead with integrity and connect with employees at every level of an organization became increasingly evident as he took on larger operational responsibilities. These experiences also sharpened his understanding of how operational decisions directly impact patient outcomes, employee engagement, and community trust.

As his career progressed, Kirk transitioned into broader healthcare administration and executive leadership roles. He served as Director of Medical Diagnostics and Cardiopulmonary Services before expanding his expertise into operational leadership within the durable medical equipment industry as Branch Manager for American Homepatient. This period provided him with valuable experience in sales management, customer service, business development, and operational efficiency outside the traditional hospital environment. His diverse professional background allowed him to develop a well-rounded leadership perspective that combined clinical understanding with business acumen and organizational strategy.

In 2002, returned to Lewistown Hospital to lead the expansion and accreditation of the Sleep Disorders Center.  Then in 2004 and again in 2006 he served as Interim Vice President of Family Health Associates where he continued progressing into senior administrative leadership. As Interim Vice President, Manager, and Supervisor, he helped oversee clinical quality initiatives, operational growth, and regulatory compliance while serving on the organization’s Senior Executive Team. His ability to manage complex healthcare operations while building collaborative relationships with providers and staff members distinguished him as a trusted and highly capable executive leader. During this period, Kirk also deepened his expertise in strategic planning and healthcare administration, eventually earning his Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from Independence University.

Kirk’s executive leadership career reached new heights during his tenure with Geisinger Lewistown Hospital and the Geisinger Western Region. Over more than sixteen years in senior leadership positions, including Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Clinical Operations, and ultimately Chief Administrative Officer, he became instrumental in guiding organizational transformation, operational excellence, and regional healthcare growth. Under his leadership, Geisinger Lewistown Hospital achieved one of its most significant accomplishments by improving from a 3-star CMS-ranked hospital in 2019 to a 5-star CMS-ranked hospital in 2021, 2022, and 2023. This achievement reflected Kirk’s unwavering commitment to quality improvement, strategic execution, patient-centered care, and workforce engagement.

Throughout his executive tenure, Kirk successfully led numerous high-impact initiatives that strengthened healthcare access and organizational performance across the region. Under his leadership the Western Region expereienced the development and expansion of the Rural Family Medicine Residency Program, helping address physician shortages and improve healthcare access in underserved communities. He also guided the successful accreditation of a Level IV Trauma Center, significantly enhancing emergency care capabilities within the region. Additionally, Kirk championed innovative surgical advancements through the implementation of MAKO and DaVinci robotic programs, demonstrating his commitment to advancing clinical excellence through technology and innovation.

Beyond operational accomplishments, Kirk became known as a servant leader who prioritized mentorship, collaboration, and organizational culture. He consistently worked to develop leadership teams capable of sustaining long-term growth and operational excellence. Colleagues and staff members recognized his approachable leadership style, strong communication skills, and ability to unite teams around a common mission. His experience negotiating physician contracts, labor agreements, and strategic partnerships further strengthened his reputation as an executive capable of navigating both the human and business dimensions of healthcare leadership.

Kirk’s influence extends well beyond hospital administration into civic leadership, nonprofit service, and community engagement. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply committed to organizations that strengthen local communities and improve the lives of others. Kirk has served on the American Hospital Association Rural Health Advisory Council.  He currently serves on a nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Community board while also holding leadership positions within Gideons International, where he recently served three years as Pennsylvania State President. His long-standing involvement with Lions International and Rotary International reflects a lifelong dedication to service, mentorship, and community development. These leadership experiences have further reinforced Kirk’s belief that strong organizations are built through trust, compassion, integrity, and servant leadership.

As a Life Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (LFACHE), Kirk has achieved one of the profession’s highest distinctions, recognizing his leadership excellence, professional accomplishments, and long-standing contributions to healthcare administration. His designation as an LFACHE underscores not only his operational expertise but also his dedication to ethical leadership, lifelong learning, and advancing the healthcare profession. Throughout his career, Kirk has remained focused on helping organizations improve quality, strengthen culture, and better serve patients and communities.

Now retired from full-time executive leadership, Kirk is actively pursuing board and advisory opportunities where he can continue making meaningful contributions. He believes his greatest value today lies in helping organizations overcome barriers, mentor leadership teams, and develop sustainable strategies for long-term success. Drawing on nearly forty years of experience, Kirk brings boards a rare combination of clinical understanding, operational expertise, strategic leadership, and people-centered management. His passion for helping others succeed continues to guide his professional journey as he transitions into this next chapter of leadership and service.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Kirk enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, fishing, hunting, and golfing. These personal interests reflect his appreciation for balance, resilience, and meaningful connection with family, community, and nature.
