Ken Kuzmich is a seasoned marketing executive, entrepreneur, consultant, and brand strategist with more than 35 years of professional experience spanning consumer packaged goods, beverage alcohol, experiential marketing, hard goods, business development, and brand leadership. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for approaching business challenges with curiosity, commercial discipline, creativity, and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking. From managing established global brands to launching entrepreneurial ventures, Ken has consistently focused on understanding what drives consumers, translating insights into practical strategies, and building programs capable of delivering measurable business results. His experience across organizations of varying sizes and stages gives him a broad perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing consumer-oriented businesses.
Ken began developing his marketing and product leadership foundation at Timex Canada, where he spent more than seven years and demonstrated an early ability to recognize opportunities that others might overlook. As Product Manager, he launched the innovative Data Link product and conceived fundamental changes to the company’s strap and band program. Those changes helped increase sales by approximately 600 percent, transforming the program into a market-leading contributor to Timex’s profit objectives. His contributions to sales and profitability earned him the Timex Award of Excellence and established a pattern that would continue throughout his career: analyze the business carefully, identify the underlying opportunity, develop a differentiated strategy, and execute with purpose.
His career subsequently expanded into the consumer packaged goods sector, where he strengthened his expertise in brand positioning, consumer marketing, innovation, and portfolio management. At First Brands Canada, Ken developed strategies that helped move the company’s cat litter products from the number-two market position to number one while increasing profitability. He also led the relaunch of Scoop Away antibacterial cat litter through television advertising, packaging improvements, and in-store programs, generating substantial revenue and market-share gains. He later brought that combination of strategic analysis and creative execution to Clorox Canada, where he worked with prominent brands including Brita and Glad. For Brita, he identified factors contributing to weak sales and helped reposition the brand’s message in response to the growing bottled-water category. On Glad, his leadership contributed to volume growth, market-share improvement, increased profitability, product launches, and new television, print, and radio creative.
Ken’s transition into the beverage-alcohol industry added another dimension to his leadership experience. At Diageo Canada, he gained experience working with internationally recognized brands including Smirnoff, Tanqueray, Baileys, and Jose Cuervo. He subsequently assumed broader leadership responsibilities with William Grant & Sons, overseeing Canadian sales and marketing initiatives for a portfolio that included Glenfiddich, Gibson’s, and Grant’s. Faced with complex commercial and brand challenges, Ken helped strengthen an underperforming portfolio, protect important brand equity, and improve profitability. His work included addressing significant supply and pricing issues while developing marketing programs designed to reinforce consumer relevance. A CFL sponsorship initiative developed during this period received the league’s Rouge Award for activation excellence, reflecting his ability to connect strategy with effective marketplace execution.
As Regional Director for Proximo Canada, Ken took on one of the most significant growth assignments of his career. Leading sales and marketing efforts across Canada, he helped transform Proximo from a relatively small market participant into a rapidly growing business. Over approximately four years, the portfolio grew from only a few thousand cases to roughly 100,000 cases. Ken helped drive that transformation by relaunching existing brands, introducing emerging brands such as The Kraken, selecting a new national agency partner, substantially expanding distribution, and developing the supporting marketing strategies and plans. The experience deepened his knowledge of Canada’s beverage-alcohol landscape while demonstrating his ability to combine brand strategy, sales leadership, distribution development, agency relationships, and disciplined execution around a common growth objective.
Entrepreneurship and consulting became a natural extension of Ken’s corporate career. Through Kuzmich Konsulting, he applied decades of brand-building experience to businesses requiring practical marketing leadership and hands-on problem solving. His work included supporting beverage-alcohol brands and agents as well as launching Tall Tale Spirits Company and developing a new adult beverage brand. These experiences gave Ken first-hand appreciation for the realities entrepreneurs face when building brands with limited resources. Rather than viewing strategy exclusively through the lens of large organizations and established budgets, he learned to balance ambition with resourcefulness, prioritization, speed, and financial discipline—perspectives that can be particularly valuable to emerging and growth-stage companies.
Ken has continued that entrepreneurial evolution as founder of Smart XM, where he is focused on rethinking experiential marketing and consumer sampling. Drawing upon years of brand-management experience, he recognized an opportunity to move experiential marketing beyond what he viewed as a traditional one-and-done staffing model. Smart XM was created around a different proposition: combine physical and virtual experiences to increase engagement, capture meaningful consumer insights, improve brand conversion, and provide marketers with clearer measures of effectiveness. This venture reflects a theme that has run throughout Ken’s career—the desire to question established practices, understand where value is being lost, and develop practical alternatives designed to produce stronger outcomes.
Across his career, Ken has developed expertise in marketing strategy, brand management, brand development, experiential marketing, creative direction, business development, strategic planning, customer insight, project management, relationship marketing, and cross-functional team leadership. He brings an especially strong understanding of consumer goods and beverage alcohol, supported by experience with both global organizations and entrepreneurial businesses. His leadership approach is grounded in problem solving and collaboration, and he has managed teams, worked with agencies and strategic partners, built key client relationships, and presented to large sales organizations. This breadth enables him to examine a challenge from multiple perspectives—consumer, brand, commercial, operational, and organizational—rather than treating marketing as an isolated business function.
Ken’s academic background further reinforces the multidisciplinary perspective he brings to leadership. He earned an MBA in Marketing from the Schulich School of Business at York University, a Master of Arts in Canadian Studies from Carleton University, and a Bachelor of Journalism with a double major in Journalism and Law from Carleton University. He later completed a Certificate in Digital Marketing Management through continuing education at the University of Toronto. His professional development has also encompassed project management, category management, leadership, behavioral interviewing, trade promotion, consumer analytics, and brand-building methodologies. Together, his business education, journalism background, and decades of practical experience support an approach that combines analytical thinking with an understanding of audiences, messaging, storytelling, and commercial execution.
Beyond his corporate and entrepreneurial achievements, Ken values leadership that contributes to the broader community. He has served as a manager and coach for female competitive hockey teams and has contributed as a publisher and board member with the West Rouge Community Association. These experiences complement his professional leadership by reflecting a willingness to invest time in teams, communities, and the development of others. Exercise and ice hockey remain personal interests, reinforcing the importance he places on energy, teamwork, perseverance, and continuous engagement. His experience speaking before large sales meetings has also strengthened his ability to communicate strategy and motivate groups around shared objectives.
At this stage of his career, Ken is interested in bringing his accumulated experience to board and advisory opportunities, particularly within consumer-oriented businesses. While generating an additional source of income is one consideration, his broader motivation is to apply decades of experience in a new capacity while helping other leaders and organizations benefit from lessons learned across established corporations, emerging brands, consulting assignments, and entrepreneurial ventures. He offers prospective organizations a practitioner who understands both the possibilities and difficulties of building brands, managing change, navigating competitive markets, and translating strategic ideas into marketplace action. His perspective is informed not simply by successes, but also by the practical lessons that come from taking calculated risks, working through difficult business situations, and adapting when circumstances demand a different approach.
Ken’s career ultimately reflects a consistent commitment to building stronger businesses by connecting insight with action. Whether repositioning a consumer brand, revitalizing a portfolio, accelerating distribution, launching a new product, developing an experiential marketing model, or guiding a team through a challenging commercial problem, he brings an emphasis on understanding the real issue before determining the solution. His combination of corporate leadership, entrepreneurial experience, consumer expertise, and strategic marketing knowledge positions him to contribute thoughtful perspective in environments where brand relevance, growth, customer engagement, and disciplined execution matter. As he expands his involvement in board and advisory work, Ken is focused on using the experience accumulated over more than three decades to help organizations make informed decisions, strengthen their brands, develop their people, and pursue sustainable growth.
