Karen Rodriguez, PhD, is an accomplished scientific, operations, and global business leader whose career spans approximately 30 years across the medical device, diagnostics, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, manufacturing, and life sciences industries. Combining the analytical discipline of a scientist with the practical perspective of an operations executive, Karen has built her career around solving complex problems, strengthening organizations, and guiding teams through transformation. Her experience encompasses molecular and immunoassay diagnostics, pharmaceutical development, global manufacturing, quality systems, supply chain management, corporate engineering, commercialization, and operational leadership. Throughout her career, she has developed a reputation for bringing clarity and perspective to environments where scientific, regulatory, operational, and business priorities intersect.
Karen most recently served as Division Vice President of Operations for Rapid Diagnostics at Abbott, culminating more than three decades of professional leadership before retiring from full-time corporate life in July 2026. In this executive role, she brought together extensive experience in operations, engineering, manufacturing, organizational leadership, and regulated healthcare environments. Prior to leading Rapid Diagnostics operations, Karen served as Abbott’s Division Vice President of Corporate Engineering, including during the extraordinary operational challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her progression into senior executive leadership reflects a career characterized by increasing responsibility, the ability to navigate complexity, and a willingness to lead when organizations and teams are confronting significant change.
Karen’s relationship with Abbott extends across multiple chapters of her career. Before assuming vice presidential responsibilities, she served as Director of Design Transfer and Process Engineering and, earlier in her career, held progressively responsible positions spanning global manufacturing technology, cancer diagnostics, technical operations, and product support. Her work included resolving longstanding manufacturing and business challenges, leading investigations and implementation initiatives, supporting validation and manufacturing scale changes within GMP environments, strengthening inspection readiness, and developing continuous improvement programs. These experiences gave Karen a comprehensive understanding of how scientific innovation ultimately becomes reliable, scalable, compliant, and commercially successful operations.
Between her tenures at Abbott, Karen expanded her leadership perspective through senior positions with Sysmex Inostics and Astellas Pharma. At Sysmex Inostics, she led manufacturing and supply chain activities supporting molecular diagnostic reagents used to determine tumor mutational status. Her responsibilities included global sourcing and production, organizational design, talent recruitment, external manufacturing relationships, critical supplier management, and cross-functional coordination with Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Finance, Commercial Operations, Supply Chain, and Project Management. At Astellas Pharma, Karen served in CMC and Medical Affairs Operations leadership positions, working across small-molecule, biologic, vaccine, anti-infective, and development partnership programs while managing complex relationships with contract manufacturers and other external partners.
A defining strength of Karen’s leadership is her ability to operate effectively across geographic, cultural, and functional boundaries. Her international experience includes substantial engagement with Japan and Japanese business culture, including approximately a decade of experience involving Japanese companies, as well as leadership and operational exposure across Germany, China, the United States, and broader Asia. At the executive level, she has supported global manufacturing operations and worked with international teams, suppliers, contract manufacturers, development partners, and technical organizations. This global perspective has strengthened her ability to recognize that successful transformation requires more than technical expertise; it also demands cultural awareness, thoughtful communication, relationship building, and the ability to align people around common objectives.
Karen’s executive capabilities are grounded in deep scientific expertise. She earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cellular Biology from Northwestern University, where her doctoral research examined the internalization signal of the Simian Virus 5 hemagglutinin-neuraminidase. She previously earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Purdue University with a minor in Genetic Biology. Her scientific foundation has informed a career encompassing protein biochemistry, medical diagnostics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical CMC development, validation, technology transfer, regulatory interaction, quality assurance, quality systems, R&D, commercialization, and manufacturing. She has also contributed to peer-reviewed scientific publications, bringing the rigor of scientific inquiry into the way she approaches operational and strategic decisions.
Beyond operational and scientific leadership, Karen has consistently demonstrated a commitment to developing people—particularly women navigating demanding professional environments. Karen raised three daughters while working full time and advancing her career. During that time, she was elected Steering Committee Chair of the Abbott Corporate Women’s Network Diagnostics Chapter. In that capacity, she helped define the organization’s mission and charter in business terms, connected programming to talent-management objectives, and developed leadership initiatives. Her work also included representing Abbott in connection with Working Mother’s recognition of the company among its “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers.” Karen, her husband, and her daughters were featured in Working Mother Magazine that year as well as in the Abbott Global Citizenship Report. Karen later received recognition through the Women of Color STEM Awards, an experience that also provided an opportunity for public speaking and further reinforced the importance she places on representation and professional advancement.
That commitment is deeply personal. During a career spent rising through scientific, engineering, manufacturing, and operational organizations that were frequently male dominated at senior levels, Karen developed firsthand insight into the challenges women can encounter as they progress into positions of greater responsibility. Her experience taught her how valuable perspective, mentorship, resilience, and strong professional networks can be in helping talented people advance especially while navigating parenthood. Today, she is passionate about supporting women, helping emerging leaders navigate organizational complexity, and contributing a perspective shaped by decades of leading in environments where different viewpoints can materially improve both decision-making and organizational performance.
As Karen transitions from full-time executive leadership into the next chapter of her career, board and advisory service represents a natural extension of her professional journey. She is interested in remaining actively connected to organizations where her experience can create meaningful value without limiting herself to companies of a particular size or revenue profile. She is especially drawn to health and wellness, women’s health, life sciences, plant-based eating and alternatives, nutrition, and organizations dedicated to supporting women. She is also open to travel and international engagement, bringing boards a combination of global operating experience, scientific credibility, executive judgment, and a practical understanding of how strategy is translated into execution.
Karen’s value in the boardroom lies in the breadth of perspectives she can bring to a single decision. She understands science and technology, but also manufacturing realities, quality and regulatory expectations, supply chains, organizational structures, commercialization, talent, and global execution. She has worked across development-stage programs and commercial operations, internal organizations and external partnerships, technical functions and executive leadership teams. This breadth enables her to examine strategic questions not simply through one functional lens, but through the interconnected considerations that determine whether an organization can successfully execute its ambitions.
Retirement, for Karen, is not a departure from leadership but an opportunity to apply it differently. She approaches board service as a way to remain intellectually engaged, maintain a meaningful connection to the business community, and contribute the experience accumulated throughout a distinguished career. An avid reader and thinker who enjoys puzzles, fitness, strength training, and nutrition planning, Karen brings the same curiosity and discipline to her personal interests that have characterized her professional life. She is energized by difficult questions, thoughtful dialogue, and opportunities to help organizations and people move from complexity toward clarity.
Ultimately, Karen Rodriguez offers boards and leadership teams a distinctive combination of scientific depth, operational scale, global experience, organizational perspective, and human-centered leadership. Her career demonstrates that strong operations are not merely about processes—they are about creating systems in which people, science, quality, strategy, and execution work together effectively. As she enters this next chapter, Karen is positioned to contribute as a thoughtful board member and advisor who can challenge assumptions constructively, bring a different perspective to difficult decisions, and help organizations build sustainable pathways from strategic vision to operational reality.
