Juan Saldaña: Leading with Patience, Purpose, and Family to Build a Better Future

Published on:

Juan L. Saldaña is a senior pharmaceutical executive and commercial leader with extensive experience building and scaling international businesses, leading commercialization strategies, and transforming complex operations across global markets. His career has been defined by a combination of strategic leadership, commercial execution, operational discipline, and the ability to build organizations and operating models capable of delivering sustainable growth.

Juan’s most significant executive progression occurred during his eight-year tenure with Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, where he advanced through increasingly senior leadership roles from Senior Director to Executive Director and ultimately Vice President and General Manager. His responsibilities expanded beyond commercial leadership to encompass regional business strategy, P&L performance, business planning, market expansion, product commercialization, supply-chain transformation, distributor partnerships, organizational development, and cross-functional execution.

During this period, Juan played a central role in building the infrastructure that supported Ultragenyx’s expansion across Latin America. He helped establish scalable commercial and operating capabilities spanning forecasting, analytics, business intelligence, CRM, market access, launch readiness, field effectiveness, patient-support services, distributor governance, and performance management. His work helped strengthen the operating infrastructure required to support multiple products and markets simultaneously.

As Vice President and General Manager for International Partner Markets, Juan held direct commercial and P&L responsibility for eight Partner Markets, representing approximately $8 million in revenue and a $1 million operating budget. In parallel, he supported the broader LATAM commercial organization of approximately 85 professionals across 10 markets, working closely with four Country General Managers who held field responsibilities and the SVP, Commercial LATAM, who held overall regional commercial accountability.

Juan operated at the intersection of regional execution and enterprise leadership, maintaining close relationships with U.S.-based corporate leadership and global functions. He represented the Latin American business alongside the SVP, Commercial LATAM, in corporate board meetings and recurring executive business reviews, providing regional perspectives on business performance, strategic priorities, commercialization plans, investment requirements, resource allocation, market opportunities, and execution risks. This experience required translating complex regional dynamics into clear business insights and aligning LATAM priorities with broader corporate strategy.

Within the broader regional organization, Juan contributed to approximately 40% revenue growth while helping expand and strengthen commercial capabilities across multiple Latin American markets. His leadership required close collaboration across Commercial, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, Finance, Market Access, Marketing, Supply Chain, and other functions to improve decision-making, launch readiness, accountability, and execution.

A defining characteristic of Juan’s leadership is his ability to connect strategy with execution. He brings a broad understanding of how commercial opportunity, market dynamics, supply, market access, finance, and organizational capabilities must work together to create a successful pharmaceutical business. Throughout his career, he has supported more than 20 product-launch initiatives and helped translate strategic opportunities into executable commercial and operating models.

His experience spans general management, commercial strategy, commercialization, commercial operations, market expansion, P&L leadership, forecasting, long-range planning, market access, pricing and reimbursement, distributor and strategic-partner management, supply-chain transformation, commercial excellence, analytics, business intelligence, and organizational transformation.

Juan is particularly recognized for operating effectively in complex, high-growth environments where businesses must simultaneously build infrastructure, enter new markets, launch innovative products, develop organizations, and deliver financial performance. His leadership style combines strategic thinking with operational accountability, allowing him to move comfortably between enterprise-level strategy and the practical execution required to deliver results.

Throughout his career, Juan has built a reputation as a leader who can bring together people, functions, and external partners around a clear business objective. His experience across commercial, operational, and general-management roles gives him a distinctive perspective on pharmaceutical growth—one that integrates market opportunity with organizational capability, disciplined execution, and long-term value creation.

Salesforce, Veeva CRM, Veeva Vault, IQVIA, SAP, and Oracle further complements his ability to lead technology-enabled commercial transformation.
