Published on:

Jon Axelsson is an accomplished supply chain and operations executive whose career spans more than four decades of leadership across e-commerce, retail, distribution, transportation, and logistics. With a foundation in Industrial Engineering and a career built around solving complex operational challenges, Jon has developed a reputation for transforming supply chain organizations into more efficient, scalable, and disciplined operations. His expertise encompasses distribution and fulfillment strategy, process automation, inventory and labor management, transportation networks, 3PL operations, facility design, engineered labor standards, and continuous improvement. Throughout his career, he has consistently connected operational execution with broader corporate objectives, helping organizations improve service while controlling costs and preparing their infrastructure for future growth.

Jon began building his operational expertise at United Parcel Service, where he served as an Industrial Engineering Supervisor. There, he planned short- and long-term production and service requirements, developed staffing and production standards through detailed work measurement, and improved operating effectiveness through facility improvements and method analysis. He also worked on controlled dispatch systems designed to reduce mileage and road time and participated in the introduction of electronic delivery technology in Western Pennsylvania. These formative years established an analytical and process-oriented approach that would remain central to his leadership philosophy throughout his career.

Jon subsequently advanced into Industrial Engineering leadership positions with May Department Stores and QVC. At May Department Stores, he joined a management team responsible for closing two distribution centers and opening a new 700,000-square-foot consolidated facility supporting more than 50 regional department stores. His responsibilities included developing direct labor budgets, implementing productivity standards and performance reporting, managing capital projects, and designing barcoding methods for cross-docking. At QVC, he continued applying industrial engineering principles across multiple distribution centers, further strengthening his expertise in work measurement and engineered labor standards. These experiences expanded his perspective from individual process improvement to the design and management of large, interconnected distribution environments.

A defining chapter of Jon’s career came during his more than nine years with Wawa. He was responsible for helping design, build, and manage a new distribution center and transportation network supporting more than 500 stores and over $1 billion in revenue. The operation incorporated ambient, refrigerated, and frozen products within a multi-temperature distribution environment operating around the clock. The new network enabled increased direct purchasing from manufacturers, reduced reliance on direct-store deliveries, standardized store receiving processes, and significantly increased product availability. Jon also negotiated a six-year outsourced distribution services agreement with McLane and managed the 3PL relationship against critical service-level measures involving fill rates, on-time delivery, safety, and quality. His work additionally included automated storage and retrieval systems and transportation-network optimization.

Jon later brought this experience to drugstore.com, where he progressed from Senior Director of Distribution Operations to Vice President of Supply Chain Operations. In this capacity, he directed direct-to-consumer and 3PL replenishment and fulfillment operations supporting approximately $500 million in revenue and more than 500 employees. He led major initiatives involving distribution-center redesign, automation, WMS process improvements, demand and inventory forecasting systems, and expansion of the company’s distribution footprint. Operational improvement programs under his leadership helped increase throughput, improve order quality, shorten order-cycle times, and reduce fulfillment labor costs. Following drugstore.com’s acquisition by Walgreens, Jon also served as a designated executive supporting integration of the companies’ supply chain operations.

Building upon his corporate leadership experience, Jon established an independent supply chain consulting practice and later worked with Insyncho Consulting Group. His engagements included traditional retail and e-commerce distribution operations, transportation optimization, service-level design, labor modeling, process improvement, and fulfillment quality. He supported organizations and brands including ThinkGeek and Ascena Retail Group and participated in work at Nike’s Memphis distribution campus. Jon also served as Senior Director of Fulfillment Operations at ThinkGeek, where he managed B2B and B2C transportation services, 3PL fulfillment operations, and supply chain integration associated with a new ERP environment. His consulting and operating experience strengthened his ability to enter complex situations, diagnose constraints quickly, and translate analysis into practical operating improvements.

Most recently, Jon served as Senior Director of e-Commerce Fulfillment Operations, Engineering, and Transportation at ThriftBooks.com. His responsibilities extended across operational process transformation, internal operations software development, transportation, maintenance, analytics, and automation. He led and supported initiatives including redesigned inbound receiving workflows, Intralox sortation systems, high-speed OCR technology capable of reading book ISBNs during sortation, and desktop OCR receiving stations. He also supported the closure or relocation of multiple processing centers while incorporating additional automation into the network. This chapter of his career illustrates the intersection of Jon’s industrial engineering roots with modern e-commerce technology, data, software development, and automated fulfillment.

Across these roles, Jon has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to redesign operations from end to end. In one major e-commerce distribution transformation, changes encompassing receiving, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, slotting, cycle counting, WMS processes, maintenance, labor management, and quality measurement contributed to a doubling of outbound capacity while supporting twice the SKU growth. Order-cycle time was reduced by approximately 60 percent, order quality improved from 95 percent to 99.9 percent, and labor costs declined by approximately 25 percent. In another engagement, he led the retrofit of an e-commerce fulfillment center with a goods-to-person material-handling system supporting approximately 20,000 SKUs and 25,000 orders per day, producing a 50 percent reduction in labor costs with an approximately 2.5-year payback. These results demonstrate his focus on measurable operational outcomes rather than transformation for its own sake.

Jon’s professional expertise is both broad and highly practical. He brings extensive knowledge of supply chain strategy, distribution-center operations, transportation, inventory management, replenishment, cross-docking, process engineering, automation, material-handling systems, WMS integration, labor management, engineered standards, 3PL selection and management, facility design, capacity planning, and business-process transformation. His industry exposure encompasses direct-to-consumer e-commerce, multichannel retail, apparel, food and beverage, convenience retail, pharmaceuticals, health and beauty products, cold-chain operations, and seafood processing and distribution. His background also includes firsthand experience unloading, sorting, packing, and delivering seafood from commercial fishing vessels, giving him an unusually grounded understanding of physical supply chains from dockside handling through sophisticated automated distribution.

Academically, Jon holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Business Administration from Penn State Great Valley. He also earned Six Sigma Black Belt certification through the University of Texas. This combination of engineering discipline, business education, and continuous-improvement methodology has shaped his approach to leadership: understand the work at a detailed level, establish meaningful measurements, identify the underlying constraint, and design systems that allow people and technology to perform more effectively. His professional capabilities are further reflected in recognized strengths spanning integrated supply chain management, process automation, Lean Six Sigma, inventory management, warehouse operations, logistics, operational excellence, strategic planning, and cross-functional leadership.

As Jon enters the next chapter of his professional journey, board and advisory service represents a natural extension of the experience accumulated throughout his career. Rather than fully stepping away from business, he is interested in applying his knowledge to organizations that can benefit from experienced operational perspective. He is particularly interested in e-commerce, retail, supply chain, logistics, distribution, and adjacent industries where scaling operations cost-effectively can become a critical strategic challenge. In a board or advisory environment, Jon can help leadership teams evaluate operational investments, understand capacity and infrastructure requirements, assess automation opportunities, strengthen 3PL relationships, establish meaningful performance measures, and work through complex supply chain decisions with a disciplined focus on long-term value.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jon brings the perspective of someone whose career has remained closely connected to the realities of operations. Whether working with executives on strategy, leading cross-functional transformation programs, designing fulfillment processes, managing third-party partners, or examining work at the individual process level, he approaches challenges with a combination of analytical discipline and practical experience. He has participated in several speaking engagements over the course of his career and has spent decades communicating operational concepts across executive, technical, and frontline audiences. Outside of work, Jon values family and enjoys fishing and golf—interests that complement a career defined by sustained commitment, problem-solving, and an appreciation for both discipline and patience.

Jon’s value as an executive advisor ultimately rests on his ability to see both the system and the details within it. Four decades in operations have given him firsthand exposure to changing technologies, business models, customer expectations, and distribution strategies, yet the central challenge has remained consistent: organizations must translate strategy into processes that reliably deliver for customers. Jon brings the experience to ask difficult operational questions, evaluate alternatives through data and practical experience, and help management teams build systems capable of supporting growth. His objective in board service is to remain actively engaged, share the lessons gained across a long operating career, and provide insight that helps organizations solve complex problems, scale responsibly, and create lasting value.
