Jim Harvey: Leading Complex Innovation with Discipline, Vision, and a Commitment to Deliver

Published on:

Jim Harvey is a seasoned aerospace executive whose career reflects more than three decades of leadership at the intersection of engineering excellence, strategic business management, and customer-focused innovation. With over 35 years of experience spanning commercial aviation, government space programs, and advanced technology development, Jim has built a reputation for successfully guiding highly complex organizations through transformational growth while consistently delivering exceptional operational and financial performance. Throughout his career, he has embraced challenging assignments with a mindset centered on disciplined execution, accountability, and the belief that no obstacle is insurmountable when talented people work toward a common objective.

As Vice President of Customer Programs for Thales InFlyt Experience, Jim leads the successful execution of global In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFE&C) programs serving airline customers around the world. His responsibilities encompass managing customer expectations, overseeing program performance, directing multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring the successful integration of sophisticated hardware, software, and service solutions within demanding schedules and financial targets. Working closely with airline executives, engineering organizations, and internal stakeholders, he has consistently delivered customer-focused solutions while balancing scope, cost, risk, and profitability in one of the world’s most technically demanding industries.

Jim’s executive leadership extends well beyond customer program execution. During his tenure as Vice President of Connected InSeat Systems and Vice President of IFE Systems Business Segment, he assumed responsibility for business operations approaching $500 million in annual revenue while leading more than 650 engineering, product management, and program management professionals. Under his leadership, teams successfully executed over 200 simultaneous development and customer programs supporting more than 70 airlines operating across 30 countries. His ability to align engineering innovation with commercial strategy enabled Thales to strengthen customer relationships, expand existing contracts, and generate approximately $100 million annually in change-order business while managing significant research and development investments that supported future product growth.

Prior to joining Thales, Jim built an exceptional foundation within the aerospace and defense sector during a distinguished career with The Boeing Company. As Director of NASA Advanced Space Programs, he was responsible for developing new business opportunities supporting NASA’s Exploration Initiative while leading proposal development, contract execution, and strategic planning activities. His work included direct collaboration with NASA Headquarters, Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, the Congressional Budget Office, and the Office of Management and Budget to develop launch vehicle concepts supporting crew transportation, cargo launch systems, and International Space Station resupply missions. These experiences provided him with a rare understanding of how engineering innovation, government policy, and commercial execution intersect to deliver national strategic objectives.

Earlier in his Boeing career, Jim managed some of the aerospace industry’s most technically demanding launch programs. He served as Senior Manager for Delta IV Programs, overseeing operational, financial, and technical execution of launch service agreements, including the successful inaugural Delta IV commercial mission. His responsibilities required careful coordination of engineering teams, international customers, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations while ensuring mission success under strict schedule and budget constraints. He also served as Project Engineer for Delta II missions supporting numerous NASA programs, including the Mars exploration missions, where he acted as the primary customer interface responsible for mission integration, systems compliance, and launch operations.

Jim began his engineering career with General Dynamics, supporting the Atlas and Titan launch vehicle programs as a structural design engineer before advancing into engineering leadership and operations management roles. His early technical experience provided the engineering discipline that would become the cornerstone of his executive leadership philosophy. Throughout every stage of his career, he has maintained a deep appreciation for technical excellence while recognizing that sustained organizational success depends equally upon effective leadership, disciplined program management, financial stewardship, and collaborative teamwork.

A graduate of the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, Jim further strengthened his executive capabilities through the prestigious Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. This combination of technical education and executive business development has enabled him to bridge engineering innovation with strategic business leadership throughout his career. His expertise encompasses program management, systems engineering, product development, portfolio management, earned value management, P&L leadership, organizational transformation, customer relationship management, and international business development across highly regulated aerospace environments.

Jim’s influence extends well beyond corporate leadership through his international experience across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, where he has cultivated lasting relationships with customers, partners, and stakeholders representing diverse cultures and business environments. He has participated in numerous executive presentations and industry engagements throughout his career and co-authored technical work presented at the International Astronautical Congress on future launch vehicle capabilities supporting NASA’s space exploration vision. His contributions to the Mars-98 Program were recognized with NASA’s Public Service Award, reflecting his commitment to excellence in both government and commercial aerospace initiatives.

Today, Jim continues to bring the same passion and energy to leadership that has defined his career for more than three decades. As he looks toward serving on corporate boards, he is motivated by a desire to continue contributing his extensive executive experience while helping organizations navigate growth, innovation, operational excellence, and strategic transformation. His broad perspective across aerospace, commercial aviation, advanced technology, government partnerships, and international business uniquely positions him to provide meaningful governance, executive guidance, and long-term strategic insight.
