“Progress is built through purpose, discipline, and the courage to transform what others accept.”
Glenn Sonntag is a seasoned sustainability, decarbonization, and international development leader whose career spans more than twenty-five years across diverse sectors, continents, and organizational structures. His professional journey reflects a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and the strategic advancement of corporate sustainability initiatives in both mature markets and rapidly evolving global regions. With experience that bridges technology, renewable energy, environmental policy, and socially responsible manufacturing, Glenn has cultivated a reputation as a thoughtful strategist and highly adaptive executive capable of leading through complexity and delivering meaningful, measurable results.
From his earliest years in the U.S. Coast Guard, Glenn developed a foundation rooted in discipline, public service, regulatory oversight, and crisis management. Shortly following his arrival at his first post as the most junior enlisted sailor on a 180 foot buoy tender sailing the frigid unfamilar waters surrounding the remote Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea, Glenn’s natural leadership was recognized by the ship’s command. He was very quickly promoted ahead of his junior deck force peers to “Leading Seaman” and assigned a specialized role as “Aids to Navigation Technician”, rallying and keeping an eye out for his colleagues under challenging operating conditions at sea while playing a key technical role on the team. His later shore-based work inspecting hazardous materials shipments, addressing pollution incidents, and supporting homeland security operations in joint multi-agency operations in Seattle shaped a meticulous, systems-driven approach to environmental and operational challenges. These formative experiences instilled in him a deep respect for risk mitigation, compliance, strong cross-functional collaboration, leadership through example, and the interconnected nature of environmental and economic systems—principles that would guide his future leadership roles.
Glenn’s academic training in environmental science and public administration further sharpened his analytical and policy-oriented perspective. At Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, Glenn immersed himself in the study of environmental governance, policy, management systems, and evidence-based decision-making, building upon his strong undergraduate foundation in Environmental Science and Technology and Chemistry cultivated at Cal Poly Humboldt. This academic grounding empowered him to excel in complex federal environments, where he would later influence strategy and long-term planning within major U.S. Government institutions.
As a Presidential Management Fellow and later a Sustainability Program Analyst at the U.S. Department of Energy, Glenn played a key role in the research and development of bioenergy technologies, and then advancing enterprise-wide sustainability, climate adaptation, and clean-energy initiatives. While working in the Bioenergy Technologies Office, Glenn convened and led a U.S. delegation of experts to India, visiting multiple cities, and then culminating in his presentation at the 2010 Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference and negotiating bilateral bioenergy R&D partnerships with senior government and private sector officials. Later, when he worked in the DOE’s new Sustainability Performance Office, Glenn convened a special cross-functional task force and spearheaded the development of DOE’s first climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan, and drafted the first DOE climate change adaptation policy signed by then Energy Secretary Chu —an achievement that demonstrated his ability to shape policy frameworks, unite diverse stakeholders, and translate scientific and technical insights into actionable strategies. His work in program budgeting, financial management, and technical oversight, and international affairs further expanded his leadership toolkit, reinforcing his expertise in navigating large, multifaceted organizations.
Glenn’s transition into the nonprofit and corporate worlds broadened his impact and global reach. At the Philadelphia Zoo, he strengthened the institution’s sustainability performance through targeted energy analysis, LEED initiatives, greenhouse gas accounting and mitigation, sustainability benchmarking, and cross-functional engagement, ultimately elevating the Zoo’s role as a leader in conservation-focused operational management, and driving enhanced donor relationships and corporate partnerships. His leadership and insights were sought after nationally, and he was asked to serve as Vice Chair of the Green Scientific Advisory Group of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Following his success in this role, he migrated to Sri Lanka, where he served in increasingly senior positions across renewable energy, apparel manufacturing, and high-growth technology environments.
In Sri Lanka, Glenn emerged as a transformative executive guiding sustainability strategy, engineering, business development, and international operations in successfully stronger leadership roles. At Eco Power Holdings, he reported to the Group CEO and Board, leading global portfolio development initiatives, managing critical relationships with foreign government officials and JV partners, identifying new renewable energy opportunities and shaping market-entry strategies across South and Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. He was frequently tapped by the Group Chairman to provide insights on new ventures beyond Eco Power Holdings within the larger Metropolitan Group, a large and prominent diversified Sri Lankan holding company. His work carried significant economic, strategic business, environmental, and community implications, reflecting his ability to mobilize investment, build partnerships, and deliver outcomes that aligned climate solutions with commercial growth.
At Hela Apparel Holdings, a socially driven global manufacturer with 18,000 employees and factories on two continents, Glenn oversaw both the engineering and corporate sustainability teams as Group General Manager of Engineering and Sustainability, reporting directly to the Group CEO and Board managing large-scale environmental programs, operational systems, and industrial engineering projects across multiple countries. While making sure all the factories and facilities were running properly and driving operational efficiency initiatives, his leadership helped also ensure that sustainability was embedded within core business functions, positioning the company as a progressive, purpose-led organization serving major international brands. His accomplishments reinforced his ability to unify sustainability objectives with business objectives and manufacturing realities, enabling responsible growth in one of the world’s most complex supply chain sectors.
His subsequent roles in international business operations and nonprofit partnership development strengthened his commercial acumen and global network. At Safeguard Global, Glenn cultivated strategic alliances and expanded outreach within the nonprofit and climate sectors, while his tenure at Foysonis demonstrated his capability to guide operations, manage international teams, and lead customer-focused initiatives within a fast-paced technology start-up across time zones and borders.
Today, as Sustainability Program Manager for Arista Networks, Glenn brings together decades of cross-sector experience to drive environmental sustainability, decarbonization, and supply chain responsibility within a leading technology hardware company. His work in operational and supply chain sustainability reflects both his technical expertise and his strategic vision, ensuring that corporate responsibility remains central to innovation, efficiency, and long-term organizational value. His global background, spanning the United States, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa, equips him with the cultural fluency and international perspective required to manage sustainability globally and at scale.
Glenn’s career is marked not only by professional achievement but by a deep sense of purpose. He is committed to work that delivers environmental progress, social benefit, and operational integrity—all while empowering teams and organizations to reach higher standards of accountability and impact. His personal dedication to reading, learning, fitness, spirituality, music, and exploring the outdoors reflects a lifelong curiosity and respect for the world he works to protect.
Throughout his journey, Glenn has remained guided by a belief that sustainability is not a trend but a responsibility, and that meaningful change requires both vision and persistence.
