Deanna Wathington, MD, MPH, FAAFP, is a distinguished physician, public health executive, academic leader, educator, and board professional whose career spans four decades of advancing health equity, strengthening organizations, and improving the systems that influence community health. Her leadership has crossed clinical medicine, higher education, nonprofit administration, government, public policy, and national public health advocacy, giving her an unusually comprehensive perspective on the relationship between institutions and the communities they serve. Throughout her career, Dr. Wathington has combined strategic planning with disciplined implementation, bringing particular expertise in organizational culture, clinical-community linkages, program development and evaluation, maternal and child health, equitable community development, grant and budget management, workforce development, and organizational change.

Dr. Wathington currently serves as Clinical Director at REACHUP, Inc., where her extensive experience in medicine and population health supports an organization dedicated to improving outcomes for families and communities. She also serves as Executive Director of the Consortium of African American Public Health Programs and maintains an academic relationship with the University of South Florida College of Public Health. These concurrent responsibilities reflect a defining feature of her career: an ability to connect clinical practice, academic knowledge, organizational leadership, and community priorities. Rather than approaching public health challenges from a single institutional perspective, she has consistently worked across disciplines and sectors to create practical pathways toward sustainable improvement.

Her academic leadership has been equally consequential. During her extensive tenure associated with the University of South Florida, Dr. Wathington held roles including Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, Director of the Public Health Practice Program, Associate Professor, and currently, Affiliate Professor. She also contributed to the Colleges of Public Health, Pharmacy, and Medicine, demonstrating the interdisciplinary orientation that has characterized her professional life.  Among her notable accomplishments, she developed and launched the first Master of Public Health degree program specifically focused on health equity accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. She previously served as co-Project Leader of the revision of the medical school curriculum and development of the Master in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences at the USF College of Medicine. This work brought together curriculum development, institutional strategy, accreditation requirements, faculty leadership, and a commitment to preparing future professionals to address complex issues and disparities in health.

Dr. Wathington subsequently expanded her executive leadership at Bethune-Cookman University, where she served as founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Dean of Graduate Studies, and Professor of Health Sciences. Her responsibilities placed her at the intersection of academic administration, program development, student advancement, faculty leadership, and institutional growth. Earlier in her career, she served as Director of the Office of Minority Health at the Florida Department of Health and as a founding Associate Dean for Academic Enrichment at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. She has also served as Medical Director of Volusia Volunteers in Medicine and as Interim Chief Executive Officer of Commonsense Childbirth, further demonstrating her capacity to move effectively between clinical, academic, nonprofit, and executive environments.

At the center of Dr. Wathington’s professional contributions is a sustained commitment to health equity and stronger clinical-community relationships. Her work has encompassed community health initiatives, women’s and children’s health, maternal health, public health policy, diversity and inclusion initiatives, equitable community development, and the development and evaluation of programs designed to improve outcomes. Her background as a family medicine physician gives her an important frontline perspective, while her experience as an executive and public health practitioner enables her to examine the broader systems influencing those individual outcomes. This combination allows her to engage questions of strategy not simply as organizational exercises, but in terms of their real-world consequences for people, institutions, and communities.

Her influence extends well beyond the organizations she has directly led. Dr. Wathington has held significant leadership responsibilities within the American Public Health Association, including service as president and immediate past president as well as service on its Executive Board. Her broader board and advisory experience has included organizations and initiatives spanning public health education, healthcare, transportation safety, maternal health, health equity, community health, and professional workforce development. Her service has included the Council on Education for Public Health, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Indigenous Working Group of the World Federation of Public Health Associations, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Health and Resilience in the Gulf of Mexico, and numerous national advisory and coordinating groups. This breadth of governance experience equips her to understand both the fiduciary and human dimensions of board leadership.

Dr. Wathington is also an accomplished scholar, author, and public voice. Her scholarly efforts have concentrated on health equity, maternal and child health, clinical-community linkages, equitable development, and increasing diversity within the health professions. She is co-editor of Black Women and Public Health: Strategies to Name, Locate, and Change Systems of Power and has contributed scholarship addressing perinatal safety and public health in the context of Black women’s reproductive health and sexuality. Her professional voice has also reached national audiences through public speaking and presentations, including engagement with major health organizations. Through scholarship, speaking, mentoring, and organizational leadership, she has consistently sought to translate knowledge into action and to expand the capacity of others to lead.

Her accomplishments have been recognized through numerous professional distinctions. Dr. Wathington is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, and she has been recognized as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. Additional honors include induction into Temple University’s Gallery of Success, the Association of American Medical Colleges Shoestring Award of Excellence, the American Public Health Association Black Caucus of Health Workers Hildrus A. Poindexter Award, and recognition as a Florida Outstanding Woman in Public Health. Her academic foundation includes a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey–New Jersey Medical School, now Rutgers New Jersey Medical School; a Master of Public Health from Temple University; and undergraduate study in zoology and physiology at Rutgers University. She completed family medicine residency training at JFK Medical Center in New Jersey and Bayfront Medical Center in Florida.

Across approximately 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Wathington has developed a leadership philosophy grounded in possibility, accountability, mentorship, and purposeful change. Her personal motto—“The leader is the relentless architect of the possibilities that others can be”—captures her conviction that effective leaders do more than manage existing structures; they help people recognize what can be achieved and create the conditions necessary to move toward it. Her strengths in strategic planning, implementation, organizational culture, and mentoring enable her to operate comfortably at both the visionary and executional levels. She understands that transformation requires a compelling direction, but also governance, trust, resources, measurable action, and sustained commitment.

Board service represents a natural extension of this leadership journey. Dr. Wathington brings the perspective of a physician who understands patient and community realities, an academic who understands evidence and education, a public health practitioner who understands systems and policy, and an executive who understands organizational priorities and implementation. She is open to serving organizations across industries and stages of development, recognizing that issues such as strategy, culture, leadership, equity, stakeholder engagement, risk, workforce development, and organizational resilience extend far beyond healthcare. Her boardroom value lies not only in the depth of her subject-matter expertise, but in her ability to ask informed questions, consider competing perspectives, mentor leaders, and connect long-range vision with practical organizational action.

Outside her formal professional responsibilities, Dr. Wathington values reading, dance, physical fitness, and travel—interests that reflect curiosity, energy, continual learning, and an appreciation for experiences beyond the workplace. These dimensions complement a career centered on people and reinforce the perspective she brings to leadership: organizations are ultimately strengthened by individuals who remain curious, engaged, adaptable, and connected to purpose. As she continues to pursue meaningful board opportunities, Dr. Wathington offers organizations a rare combination of clinical credibility, executive judgment, academic rigor, governance experience, strategic insight, and a deeply established record of service.
