David L. Ribbens stands as a respected and deeply impactful figure in the landscape of educational-based athletics. With more than 45 years of professional experience in athletics administration, physical education, and sports mentorship, David’s career exemplifies not only enduring leadership but also a tireless dedication to the holistic development of students, athletes, and fellow educators. His journey, which began in the classrooms and soccer fields of Trinity Christian College, has grown into a lifetime mission of elevating athletic programs and mentoring future leaders in sports and education. Guided by a personal commitment to service, character, and excellence, David’s influence stretches far beyond the institutions he has served.

Born in Holland, Michigan, David’s early life was shaped by a love of sport and education. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Calvin College, where he captained the soccer team and was named to the All-MIAA Conference. His educational pursuits continued with a Master’s degree from Chicago State University and doctoral studies at Springfield College, where his dissertation work explored the theme of Muscular Christianity and its influence on the formation of the National Christian College Athletic Association—a topic that reflects David’s keen ability to intertwine sport with cultural and moral development.

David’s professional career took root at Trinity Christian College, where he held a range of teaching and administrative roles across two decades. He served as an Assistant Professor of Physical Education, coached multiple varsity sports, and directed one of the most successful youth soccer leagues in the region. As Athletic Director from 1984 to 2001, David oversaw the expansion of the college’s athletic offerings, adding four new sports and integrating the program into the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. His tenure was marked by strategic growth, inclusivity in sport, and a culture of integrity.

Following his remarkable career at Trinity, David accepted the role of Director of Athletics at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he served for 20 years. Tasked with leading a complex program comprising over 80 coaches and nearly 50 sports teams, David implemented thoughtful reforms that strengthened both competitive excellence and student wellness. From managing 750 annual contests to building sustainable staff and community relationships, his leadership was synonymous with precision, heart, and vision. Even in retirement, David was asked to return as Interim Director in 2024 to help guide the department through budget restructuring and staff transitions—another testament to his enduring value and leadership trust.

Throughout his career, David has remained active on numerous advisory boards and associations. As President of the Independent School League (ISL) and a long-serving representative to the Illinois Council of Private Schools (ICOPS), he played a pivotal role in shaping state policy and championing equity for private educational institutions. His advocacy led to key bylaw amendments presented to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), influencing over 800 member schools and reinforcing his reputation as a policy-savvy leader.

David’s contributions extend well beyond administrative achievements. As a published author and thought leader, his scholarly work includes Hearty Muscular Christianity and critiques of state athletic classification systems, reflecting both academic rigor and a moral compass deeply aligned with fairness in competition. His public speaking engagements—from chapel services to national conventions—have consistently inspired audiences to reflect on the values embedded in sport and education.

Beyond his institutional roles, David has launched his own consultancy, DLR Athletics Consulting LLC, providing mentorship to athletic directors across the country. Partnering with the Southern Teachers Agency, he currently advises four ADs, offering personalized guidance grounded in decades of field experience. His consulting work exemplifies his role as a leader of leaders, helping others find clarity, structure, and inspiration in their roles.

David’s leadership philosophy is deeply personal. He believes in the transformative power of mentorship, the importance of community engagement, and the role athletics play in shaping character. This belief has not only guided his professional decisions but also his volunteerism. From serving on the Board of Directors for youth soccer clubs and academic organizations to sponsoring children through international humanitarian efforts, David’s life is a reflection of purpose-driven leadership.

Throughout his journey, David has earned numerous honors, including induction into the National Christian College Athletic Association Hall of Fame, the CCAC Hall of Fame, and recognition as the Illinois Division I Athletic Director of the Year. Yet, he remains grounded in humility, describing himself as a mentor eager to “give back” and explore new ways of contributing to organizations with shared values.

Today, David continues to inspire through consulting, writing, and speaking, driven by the belief that leadership is not a position but a calling. His adaptability, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to student development make him a valuable asset to any board or organization that seeks not only experience but vision, heart, and impact.
