“Better to do things right than to do them twice.”
Clapton Dias is a globally recognized biopharmaceutical executive, strategic advisor, and venture investment leader whose career has been defined by a singular purpose: transforming scientific innovation into meaningful patient outcomes. Over the course of more than twenty-four years, he has built an exceptional reputation as a leader capable of bridging the worlds of science, business, investment, and operational execution. Through a combination of deep technical expertise, strategic vision, and collaborative leadership, he has helped organizations navigate complex development pathways, maximize portfolio value, and bring innovative therapies to patients around the world.
Born with a natural curiosity for science and a passion for improving human health, Clapton began his professional journey by pursuing a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Mumbai. His dedication to advancing medical science led him to the United States, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. This strong academic foundation established the framework for a career that would eventually span pharmaceutical development, biotechnology innovation, venture investment, and corporate leadership across multiple continents.
Early in his career, Clapton developed specialized expertise in clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and translational sciences. His work at PRA Health Sciences and later at Bristol Myers Squibb exposed him to some of the industry’s most challenging drug development programs. During this period, he played important roles supporting cardiovascular and metabolic drug development initiatives, including contributions to the advancement of Eliquis, one of the most successful anticoagulant therapies in modern medicine. These experiences provided him with firsthand insight into the rigorous scientific and regulatory requirements necessary to successfully advance therapies from concept through commercialization.
As his leadership capabilities expanded, Clapton joined Amgen, where he spent seven years leading clinical pharmacology and early development initiatives across multiple therapeutic areas. Most notably, he served as an Early Development Strategy Leader and Clinical Pharmacology Leader for Repatha (Evolocumab), the groundbreaking PCSK9 monoclonal antibody that transformed cholesterol management. His ability to integrate scientific rigor with business strategy enabled development teams to make informed decisions that accelerated advancement while minimizing risk. During his tenure, he established himself as a trusted leader capable of navigating highly complex development environments while maintaining focus on patient-centered outcomes.
Building on this success, Clapton accepted increasingly influential leadership positions within the pharmaceutical industry. At Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson company, he served as Scientific Director and Clinical Pharmacology Leader, contributing to the lifecycle management and expansion of Invokana while shaping future pipeline opportunities. His role required close collaboration across research, development, regulatory, and commercial organizations, further strengthening his understanding of how strategic alignment across functions drives successful outcomes. His ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders became one of his defining leadership strengths.
At BioMarin Pharmaceutical, Clapton’s responsibilities expanded from scientific leadership into enterprise-wide strategic management. As Head of Clinical Pharmacology and later Vice President and Head of Program Strategy Leadership, he guided translational research programs, clinical development initiatives, and commercial lifecycle strategies for some of the company’s most important rare disease therapies. He helped recruit and develop high-performing leaders, chaired governance committees responsible for portfolio prioritization, and played a critical role in shaping investment decisions that balanced innovation with long-term organizational sustainability. His work contributed to multiple successful product approvals and reinforced his reputation as a leader capable of aligning scientific innovation with corporate growth objectives.
In 2020, Clapton transitioned into the venture and investment sector when he joined UPMC Enterprises as Vice President and Head of Portfolio Development for Translational Sciences. In this role, he managed approximately $150 million in investments spanning more than twenty-five therapeutic and diagnostic assets. He partnered with academic investigators, entrepreneurs, and healthcare innovators to transform promising discoveries into commercially viable ventures. His responsibilities extended beyond scientific evaluation to include company formation, business strategy, capital allocation, and commercialization planning. As a senior member of the investment committee, he contributed to syndicate investment decisions and helped guide emerging healthcare companies toward successful growth trajectories.
His experience in venture-backed innovation naturally expanded into boardroom leadership. Clapton served as a Board Observer for multiple biotechnology companies operating in areas including monoclonal antibodies, cell therapies, gene therapies, and protein engineering. These experiences deepened his understanding of corporate governance, executive oversight, stakeholder alignment, and strategic decision-making. By working closely with founders, investors, and executive leadership teams, he developed a nuanced appreciation for the challenges and opportunities that define high-growth healthcare organizations.
Most recently, Clapton served as Senior Vice President and Global Head of R&D Strategy, Portfolio, External Innovation, and Hubs at EMD Serono, the healthcare business of Merck KGaA. In this executive role, he was accountable for directing global R&D strategy supporting approximately $1.7 billion in annual research and development investments. He led a diverse organization of more than 150 professionals across North America, Europe, and Asia while overseeing portfolio governance, external innovation, program management, and digital transformation initiatives. His leadership helped strengthen decision-making frameworks, improve organizational productivity, and expand the company’s ability to identify and integrate external innovation opportunities.
Throughout his career, Clapton has consistently demonstrated an ability to navigate both scientific complexity and business uncertainty. He has contributed to five approved therapies, numerous Investigational New Drug applications, and multiple strategic portfolio transformations. His expertise spans translational medicine, clinical development, diagnostics, companion diagnostics, portfolio strategy, business development, venture investing, and digital transformation. He has also been an advocate for leveraging emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, to improve research productivity and accelerate healthcare innovation.
Beyond his executive accomplishments, Clapton remains deeply committed to mentorship, leadership development, and organizational growth.
