Christian Lenges is a science-based growth and commercialization executive, venture builder, CEO, and experienced Board Director with more than 27 years of international experience across biotechnology, specialty materials, polymers, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable technologies. His career has focused on converting complex science into scalable businesses while making consequential decisions around technology portfolios, capital allocation, strategic partnerships, manufacturing, and market entry.
Christian currently leads Planet Smart, where he is guiding a capital Constrained venture through a strategy reset encompassing financing, governance, manufacturing partnerships, market sequencing, and commercialization. He also serves as President of Cegnel LLC, partnering with startups, multinational companies, and investors to develop and commercialize emerging technologies. These roles give him current operating experience at the intersection of venture creation, capital strategy, technology development, and execution.
Previously, Christian served as Venture Director at International Flavors & Fragrances, where he led the development of the Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials™ platform and managed a multidisciplinary organization of more than 70 professionals with an annual program portfolio exceeding $30 million. He also helped create AlphaBio, a joint venture between IFF and Kemira representing a €140 million investment in commercial biomanufacturing capacity. As an AlphaBio board member, Christian contributed to governance and strategic decision-making as the venture moved from concept toward commercial production.
Earlier, Christian spent more than two decades at DuPont in leadership roles spanning business development, strategic planning, research, product management, and innovation. He managed portfolios representing more than $3 billion in projected opportunities and development investments exceeding $250 million, while contributing to M&A initiatives, international partnerships, government funding, and commercialization programs across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Christian holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and Catalysis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MBA from Drexel University, and has completed executive education in Artificial Intelligence for Business Strategy at MIT Sloan. He is an inventor or co- inventor on 47 patents and has authored or co-authored more than 28 scientific publications, technical articles, and presentations.
His board and advisory experience includes AlphaBio, the Renewable Carbon Initiative, Germany’s BioEconomy Council of North Rhine- Westphalia, and sustainability and manufacturing advisory initiatives. Christian brings boards a combination of scientific depth, operating experience, investment judgment, and commercialization discipline, particularly when organizations face complex decisions involving technology portfolios, strategic partnerships, scale-up, capital deployment, and market entry under technical and commercial uncertainty.
