“When the Sun Comes Up, You Better Be Running.”

Carl B Tash is a seasoned investment executive, strategic advisor, and board member whose career has been defined by an ability to identify strategic advantages, simplify complex investment decisions, and translate analysis into actionable solutions. With more than four decades of experience spanning real estate private equity, capital markets, acquisitions, corporate strategy and M&A, transaction structuring, and risk management, Carl has advised and led organizations through significant investments, portfolio transformations, and periods of strategic change. His career reflects a disciplined focus on investment success, thoughtful decision making, and the development of enduring relationships across the global investment community.

Carl began building his investment foundation at JMB Realty Corporation in Chicago, joining the firm in 1978 as an Acquisitions Analyst and progressing through positions of increasing responsibility to become Executive Vice President. His advancement reflected both his investment judgment and his ability to evaluate opportunities from multiple perspectives, including financial performance, transaction structure, market dynamics, and long term strategic value. From 1984 through 1989, he was the youngest member of both JMB Realty Corporation’s Executive Committee and Investment Committee, giving him significant exposure to senior level decision making early in his career.

Following his tenure at JMB Realty Corporation, Carl served as President of JMB Institutional Realty Corporation from 1990 through 1991. He subsequently founded Cliffwood Partners LLC in Los Angeles, where he served as Founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Portfolio Manager from 1992 through 2009. Through Cliffwood Partners, Carl expanded his experience into real estate securities investment funds, combining his understanding of underlying real estate fundamentals with the discipline required to evaluate investments through the capital markets. Nearly two decades as a founder and portfolio manager further developed the independent judgment, accountability, and entrepreneurial perspective that continue to shape his advisory work today.

In 2010, Carl joined Starwood Capital Group, beginning a significant chapter of his career within one of the world’s leading diversified real estate investment firms. During his tenure, he held multiple senior leadership responsibilities across the United States and Europe and participated in investment decisions spanning private funds, public investment vehicles, mortgage origination, core investments, and opportunistic strategies. He served on the Investment Committees for multiple Starwood Opportunity Funds, Starwood Property Trust, and Starwood’s Core and Core Plus investment vehicles, providing him with a broad perspective across asset classes, investment structures, geographies, and risk profiles.

As Chief Investment and Credit Officer for Starwood Capital Group, Carl was responsible for reviewing investment opportunities before they were presented to the firm’s Investment Committee. He also spent five years as Starwood Capital Group’s primary input to Starwood Property Trust’s mortgage origination team, bringing disciplined credit analysis and investment judgment to complex transactions. Alongside these responsibilities, he mentored analysts and associates across the United States and supervised the acquisition strategy and asset management of mall and lifestyle center investments, demonstrating his ability to combine investment oversight with talent development and operational understanding.

Carl played an equally influential role in the creation and development of Starwood Retail Partners. Working alongside CEO Scott Wolstein, he helped create and execute the investment activities that resulted in the acquisition of twenty two enclosed regional malls and eight open air malls and lifestyle centers. He later served as Chief Strategist, Acting Chief Operating Officer, and Board Member, where he helped restructure the retail platform, established the Asset Management function, and led the hiring and onboarding of a new executive leadership team. These responsibilities required Carl to move beyond investment selection and engage directly with organizational design, operating strategy, leadership development, and portfolio execution.

His responsibilities at Starwood also became increasingly international. Carl relocated to Luxembourg in 2015 and subsequently became Chief Investment Officer for Europe. In that role, he supervised London based investment teams as they reviewed and underwrote acquisition opportunities throughout Europe, worked closely with teams entering unfamiliar markets and asset classes, and led the European Board of Directors responsible for investment approvals. He also developed a business plan to strengthen the substance and capabilities of the Luxembourg operation, bringing his investment expertise together with governance, organizational planning, and cross border leadership.

Carl’s European leadership extended to board governance when he led the reorganization of Starwood Capital Group’s Luxembourg office and the restructuring of boards supporting the firm’s European investment activities. He served as Chairman of the European Board of Directors through 2017. His experience operating across the United States and Europe strengthened an already sophisticated understanding of how governance, investment discipline, organizational structure, and local market considerations must work together when capital is deployed across borders.

In 2019, Carl joined Centennial Real Estate as Chief Investment Officer and later transitioned to Strategic Advisor. At Centennial, a nationally recognized innovator in the creation of suburban mixed use assets, he led acquisition efforts for three distinctive transactions that significantly repositioned the firm’s investment portfolio and expanded its opportunities for future densification. The business plans for these assets envision their redevelopment into best in class mixed use campuses, illustrating Carl’s ability to recognize value not simply in what an asset represents today, but in what it can strategically become over time. He also managed capital raising efforts that contributed to the Lincoln Property Company platform and growth capital transaction, while serving on Centennial’s Executive Committee and Investment Committee.

Carl continues to apply his experience as a Strategic Advisor to a Chicago based real estate private equity firm that recently raised its fifth opportunity fund. His primary role is to advise and mentor the Acquisitions Team, helping improve efficiency and focus resources on opportunities with a stronger probability of execution and alignment with fund return objectives. This work reflects a recurring theme throughout his career: investment success is not simply about generating more opportunities, but about applying judgment and discipline to determine where an organization should invest its time, attention, relationships, and capital.

Board leadership and governance have been integral to Carl’s professional journey. He served on the United States Investment Advisory Board for Al Futtaim Real Estate, advising on United States investment opportunities for Omar Al Futtaim’s Family Office real estate activities. He also completed a four year term as one of three independent directors of Pictet Alternative Assets in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was the only board member from the United States. Pictet Alternative Assets manages investment strategies across hedge funds, corporate private equity, and real estate private equity, providing Carl with additional exposure to sophisticated global alternative investment strategies, including thematic and ESG focused approaches.

Carl has also maintained a longstanding commitment to advancing the real estate profession and supporting future generations of industry leaders. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Zell Lurie Real Estate Center at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for the entire existence of the program, spanning more than twenty five years, and remains an active participant in its student mentoring program. He also currently serves with the Urban Land Institute Commercial and Retail Development Council Silver, maintaining an active connection to evolving industry thinking, development trends, and experienced peers across the real estate sector.

Education has played an important role in shaping Carl’s analytical and strategic perspective. He earned his MBA from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in Accounting and Entrepreneurial Management. This combination of financial rigor, entrepreneurial thinking, and decades of practical investment experience has enabled him to evaluate opportunities through both quantitative and strategic lenses. He understands that strong investment decisions require more than attractive projections; they require careful consideration of risk, structure, management capability, market dynamics, execution, and the alignment of interests among stakeholders.

Across his career, Carl has developed deep expertise in investment strategy, acquisitions and dispositions, corporate acquisitions, corporate strategy, risk management, transaction structuring, negotiation, relationship management, and capital markets. Yet the distinguishing quality of his leadership is the way these disciplines come together. He approaches complicated situations by identifying the variables that truly matter, separating critical issues from unnecessary complexity, and helping decision makers concentrate on solutions that can realistically be executed. His experience on investment committees, executive committees, corporate boards, and advisory boards allows him to contribute with the perspective of both an investor and a governance leader.

At this stage of his career, Carl brings organizations something increasingly difficult to replicate: judgment developed through decades of evaluating investments, structuring transactions, navigating market cycles, building platforms, managing risk, mentoring professionals, and participating in consequential decisions across different economic environments. He is particularly effective when organizations face complex opportunities that require clarity, disciplined analysis, and an independent perspective. Whether advising an acquisitions team, reviewing an investment opportunity, participating in a board discussion, or helping leadership evaluate strategic alternatives, Carl remains focused on identifying the path most likely to create durable value.

Underlying Carl’s professional accomplishments is a leadership philosophy centered on preparation, objectivity, relationships, and results. He values rigorous analysis but understands that successful transactions and organizations ultimately depend on people who can build trust, communicate clearly, negotiate thoughtfully, and execute with discipline. His career demonstrates an enduring commitment to helping investment teams and organizations make better decisions while sharing the experience he has accumulated with emerging professionals and established leaders alike.

Character Carl demonstrates integrity, independence, and accountability through a career built around consequential investment decisions and trusted advisory relationships. He approaches leadership with a commitment to sound judgment, mentorship, and creating value for the organizations and professionals he serves.

Knowledge Carl brings more than four decades of sophisticated experience across real estate private equity, investment strategy, acquisitions, capital markets, transaction structuring, credit, risk management, and governance. His experience across the United States and Europe, combined with leadership roles at prominent investment organizations, enables him to evaluate opportunities from financial, operational, strategic, and governance perspectives.

Strategic Carl excels at identifying strategic advantages within complex investment environments and translating them into focused, actionable decisions. His career demonstrates an ability to recognize opportunities, assess risk, prioritize resources, restructure platforms, and align investment activity with long term return objectives.

Communication Carl communicates complex investment considerations with clarity and a strong focus on the issues most relevant to decision makers. His extensive experience working with investment committees, boards, executive teams, acquisition professionals, and global investment partners allows him to build productive dialogue, challenge assumptions constructively, and help stakeholders move toward informed decisions.
