Brett W. Olson: Leadership through Collaboration, Innovation, and Integrity

Published on:

Brett W. Olson is a globally recognized financial services executive, advisor, and thought leader whose professional journey spans more than three decades across asset management, capital markets, and sustainable finance. With a career beginning in the early 1990s and evolving through some of the world’s most influential financial institutions, Brett has established himself as an authentic leader whose impact extends well beyond bottom-line growth into culture-building, people development, and advancing critical initiatives in mental health and sustainability. His narrative is one of continual transformation—both in the businesses he has led and in the lives of the individuals he has mentored.

Brett’s career took root in the international industrial sector, where his early years at Pfauter-Maag in Germany and Mecup S.r.l. in Italy exposed him to the complexities of multinational business operations. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for his deep understanding of cross-border markets, client engagement, and cultural fluency. Fluent in German, Italian, and French, Brett quickly demonstrated his capacity to adapt to different environments, building bridges across diverse teams and establishing relationships that underscored the importance of global perspectives in leadership.

After completing his MBA at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in 1999, Brett transitioned into the financial sector with Lehman Brothers. Over nearly a decade, he advanced through critical roles in structured finance, credit syndicate, and equity product management. At Lehman, Brett honed his expertise in structured products and securitized markets, developing a nuanced understanding of complex financial instruments while also learning to navigate the intense demands of high-stakes, volatile markets. His tenure at Lehman, including time through the firm’s collapse and transition into Barclays, shaped his resilience and reinforced his ability to lead with steadiness during periods of uncertainty.

Following Lehman, Brett joined Standard Chartered as Director and Head of Syndicate for Europe and North America. His role placed him at the intersection of debt capital markets and global distribution, further strengthening his capabilities in structured transactions and large-scale syndication. From there, he was recruited by Nomura, where he served as Managing Director, overseeing ABS sales and illiquid product distribution across EMEA. At Nomura, Brett not only expanded the firm’s market share but also distinguished himself as a mentor and cultural leader, taking on responsibilities such as MBA recruiting and community engagement. His leadership in corporate philanthropy raised funds for children’s charities and earned him recognition as a champion for social impact in parallel with his professional achievements.

In 2013, Brett embarked on what would become a defining chapter of his career at BlackRock. Appointed Managing Director and Head of iShares Fixed Income ETFs (EMEA), he was tasked with accelerating the growth of the UCITS fixed income ETF business. Under his leadership, the business achieved extraordinary success, scaling assets under management by over 450% to reach $200 billion and generating an additional $400 million in annual revenues. Brett pioneered new product development strategies, launched innovative suites of ETFs, and redefined the role of fixed income ETFs in modern portfolio construction. His efforts modernized the bond market by encouraging broker-dealers to trade ETFs through fixed income desks, catalyzing systemic change in market structure.

At BlackRock, Brett’s leadership extended well beyond commercial results. He was appointed to the European iShares Executive Committee and the Global Product Executive Committee, where he influenced strategic decision-making at the highest levels. Yet his impact was equally profound in shaping company culture. He co-chaired the EMEA Mental Health Steering Committee and was a founding member of the Global Mental Health Steering Committee, leading initiatives that elevated employee well-being as a core business priority. Brett also co-chaired BlackRock Gives, championing philanthropic efforts that supported mental health charities and emergency medical services in London. His dual focus on business innovation and cultural transformation made him a leader whose influence was both strategic and deeply human.

In 2023, Brett joined the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) as Index Investing Lead. In this role, he convened over 25 financial organizations and multiple advisory groups to create new “transition-informed” indices designed to drive real-world progress toward a net-zero economy. His work contributed to shaping the frameworks by which asset owners could align their investment strategies with climate goals, underscoring Brett’s ability to operate at the forefront of financial innovation while tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Today, Brett serves as Advisor to the CEO of ESG360°, a cutting-edge firm that leverages artificial intelligence to streamline ESG reporting. His guidance helps organizations reduce complexity, improve data integrity, and accelerate strategic ESG initiatives. Through this role, Brett continues his legacy of advancing sustainability, corporate responsibility, and governance in ways that strengthen both compliance and long-term enterprise value.

Across his career, Brett has remained committed to the development of people and the fostering of inclusive cultures. He has mentored analysts and executives, spearheaded leadership programs, and championed initiatives to improve mental health awareness in the workplace. His leadership philosophy rests on authenticity, collaboration, and the belief that innovation flourishes when individuals feel valued, supported, and inspired.

Beyond the boardroom, Brett is deeply passionate about swimming, travel, and personal development. He has lived and worked extensively across Europe and the United States, drawing on his international experiences to cultivate empathy, adaptability, and a global mindset. His personal life reflects the same values he brings to his professional roles: curiosity, resilience, and a dedication to continuous growth.
