Reflecting on decades of experience, the author highlights the importance of "just culture" environments where pilots feel empowered to prioritize safety without fear of reprisal. The US Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) has made strides in reducing accidents, achieving longer periods between fatal incidents, but the goal remains zero fatalities. Through data-driven initiatives and collaboration across the industry, the USHST has introduced safety enhancements, including simulation-based decision-making training and best practice guides. By instilling strong safety principles in student pilots and promoting transparency among regulators and operators, the vision of a safer helicopter community becomes achievable.
