Cultivating Strategic Partnerships in the Performing Arts

Strategic partnerships in the performing arts are built long before they are tested. When a major funder unexpectedly withdrew support from Pride, the musical I co-wrote with Commodore about the Black family experience, years of trust, collaboration, and genuine community relationships became the foundation that kept the production moving forward. By reaching out to longtime supporters, welcoming new introductions, and clearly communicating the purpose behind our work, we were able to close the funding gap. The experience reinforced a lesson I carry with me today: strong partnerships are not simply about resources—they are about shared purpose, mutual respect, and the trust we build through the small choices we make over time.
