The Importance of Accurate Financial Reporting: Insights from Michelle Marschel

Accurate financial reporting is at the core of trust, transparency, and successful operations in the financial services industry. Throughout my career, I’ve seen how precise and thorough financial reporting serves as the backbone of both internal operations and client trust. Whether preparing or reviewing critical financial documents, I have always prioritized meticulous oversight, recognizing that every detail counts when it comes to financial accuracy and compliance.

Accurate financial reporting requires a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape and the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights. From my time as a Senior Fund Accounting Manager at Empower to my current role as a Fund Accounting Director at Gen II Fund Services, I’ve adhered to a rigorous approach in financial documentation, ensuring every figure, accrual, and allocation is correct and substantiated. These practices not only meet regulatory requirements but also provide a reliable foundation for strategic decision-making.

One best practice I emphasize is establishing a comprehensive review process. No document leaves my desk without a thorough review, often involving a second set of eyes to catch any inconsistencies or oversights. At Gen II, my team and I work together to cross-reference data and implement controls that identify potential errors before they can affect our clients or our operations. This approach has proven invaluable, particularly in high-stakes situations such as quarterly audits or year-end reports.

A key part of financial reporting accuracy is open collaboration with both internal and external partners. Throughout my career, I have prioritized fostering strong relationships across departments—whether that’s working closely with compliance teams to stay ahead of regulatory changes or coordinating with vendors to ensure data integrity. At Empower, for example, we successfully maintained daily valuations across 162 funds by coordinating closely with multiple vendors, ensuring that our reports remained accurate and timely.

In my view, accurate reporting is not just a functional necessity—it’s a commitment to our clients and stakeholders. Each report we generate reflects the integrity of our operations, and by maintaining high standards, we demonstrate our reliability and accountability. Every detail in a financial report matters, and by focusing on accuracy, we not only comply with regulations but also build the foundation of trust that’s critical to success in the financial industry.

Ultimately, my goal is to create an environment where accurate financial reporting is part of our organizational culture. By embedding these best practices into our daily processes and fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork, I ensure that our reporting continues to uphold the highest standards, providing reliable data that supports both operational success and client confidence.
