Stephen D. Hess, Ph.D.: Transforming Scientific Insight Into Global Therapeutic Impact

Published on:

Stephen D. Hess, Ph.D., is a distinguished drug discovery executive whose career spans more than three decades across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Known for his ability to unite scientific rigor with strategic vision, he has dedicated his professional life to advancing therapeutic innovation and shaping the future of preclinical research. His leadership is defined by a consistent capacity to translate early scientific breakthroughs into meaningful drug development outcomes, positioning him as a trusted expert for organizations seeking to accelerate discovery pipelines and build global scientific capability.

From the earliest stages of his career, Stephen demonstrated a natural curiosity and a profound commitment to understanding complex biological systems. His academic foundation—a B.S. in Zoology followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biology from US Universities—established the depth of knowledge that would fuel his contributions to neuroscience, immune disorders, and molecular pharmacology. His postdoctoral training in the United States further strengthened his scientific versatility and helped launch a career that would eventually span several continents and research cultures.

Stephen’s professional journey began in earnest at SIBIA Neurosciences, where he advanced from Research Scientist to Principal Research Scientist and eventually to Department Head of Electrophysiology. Over six years, he shaped early-stage discovery programs, developed industry-leading electrophysiology platforms, and built multidisciplinary teams capable of executing complex experimental strategies. His work contributed to the understanding of membrane proteins such as ion channels and GPCRs and their therapeutic relevance, areas that would ultimately become defining pillars of his expertise. As a project team member in a multi-target collaboration with a major European Pharma firm he contributed to the advancement of therapeutic candidates into the clinic.

His success at SIBIA opened the door to a significant research role at Merck, where Stephen spent five years further refining his scientific leadership in a large Pharma environment. At Merck, he supported program teams through the rigorous process of target evaluation, assay design, and candidate selection. His ability to collaborate effortlessly with chemists, biologists, and clinical strategists strengthened the integration of research across the pipeline, and his contributions helped advance therapeutic candidates toward clinical evaluation.

Stephen went on to expand his impact at Invitrogen, where he served as a Research Fellow focused on ion channels—a molecular class that would remain central to his work throughout his career. His scientific insight and his ability to bridge biological experimentation with emerging technologies positioned him as an influential leader within the company. He later joined EMD Millipore as Senior R&D Manager, where he directed platform development projects and guided teams responsible for creating innovative tools that enabled more precise drug discovery workflows across the industry.

In 2012, Stephen’s global journey took him to Hamburg, Germany, where he joined Evotec as a Research Leader in the In Vitro Pharmacology Department. Over the next decade, he became instrumental in driving integrated drug discovery collaborations for partners across biotech and pharma. His expertise in ion channels and GPCRs, coupled with his strong understanding of assay development and translational biology, reinforced Evotec’s reputation as a scientific powerhouse. His leadership ensured that programs consistently progressed from exploratory research toward viable therapeutic candidates with strong preclinical validation, including the progression of therapeutic candidates into late stage clinical trials.

Stephen’s influence continued to grow, including  Singapore-based appointments first as Vice President, Expert in Residence for  Evotec and culminating as Vice President, Expert in Residence for the 65LAB Alliance. In these roles, he worked at the intersection of academia, industry, and investment to identify and nurture promising scientific innovations, and broadened his expertise through evaluation of multiple novel target and platform proposals for varied disease indications. His ability to assess translational potential, mentor research teams, and cultivate cross-institutional collaborations all contributed toward accelerating the growth of Singapore’s biotech ecosystem. Through this work, he strengthened the bridge between scientific curiosity and commercial opportunity for the next generation of biotech innovators.

As a scientific leader, Stephen is broadly known for his refined expertise in ion channels, electrophysiology, and assay development, but his influence extends far beyond technical mastery. He is recognized for advancing programs into late-stage clinical trials, guiding organizational strategy, and elevating the capabilities of teams across multiple disciplines. His career reflects a rare combination of hands-on laboratory experience, high-level scientific strategy, and cross-cultural executive leadership.

Throughout his international career, Stephen has remained committed to scientific excellence, integrity, and collaborative innovation. He has lived or worked in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Singapore, gaining global perspective and developing a leadership style rooted in respect, curiosity, and continuous improvement. His comfort in multicultural environments has enriched his capacity to lead diverse scientific teams and forge lasting partnerships across borders.

Today, Stephen seeks new opportunities to serve organizations as an advisor, board member, or strategic partner. His deep knowledge of preclinical research, combined with his proven ability to evaluate and grow emerging biotech ventures, makes him ideally suited for companies pursuing innovation in drug discovery, AI-enabled R&D, and next-generation therapeutic platforms. His mission is clear: to apply decades of discovery experience to support organizations dedicated to improving global health outcomes through scientific advancement.
