He was honored with the prestigious Franklin Ellenbogen Prize in Hematology-Oncology and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for his academic excellence. Following medical school, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at New York Hospital from 1982 to 1985, serving as Assistant Chief Resident. He then pursued a Fellowship in Cancer Medicine at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1985 to 1988, where his work earned him the Public Health Service Commendation Medal.

    During his time at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. La Rocca held a Senior Investigator position, contributing to clinical and translational research with a focus on drug development, including work on suramin, then a novel cancer treatment. His research and expertise in cancer therapies have been widely recognized, as evidenced by his numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and his role as a key investigator in multiple clinical trials.

    In 1997, Dr. La Rocca founded the Kentuckiana Cancer Institute, where he served as Director for over 15 years. During this time, he led a range of clinical trials, many investigator-initiated and pioneered advancements in neuro-oncology, earning him recognition as one of the foremost experts in the field. He played a pivotal role in establishing innovative treatment protocols for high-grade gliomas and other complex cancers, contributing significantly to the field of oncology.

    From 2012 to 2022, Dr. La Rocca served as Director of Precision Medicine and a Cancer Medicine Specialist at Norton Cancer Institute, where he was responsible for leading precision medicine initiatives and expanding clinical research efforts. His work focused on personalized treatment approaches, integrating cutting-edge genomic research with clinical care to enhance cancer therapy’s efficacy and specificity. Dr. La Rocca’s leadership at Norton Cancer Institute further cemented his reputation as a leading figure in cancer care and precision medicine.

    In addition to his clinical and entrepreneurial roles, Dr. La Rocca has held several academic appointments, including serving as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Kentucky and an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville. He has also been actively involved in mentoring the next generation of medical professionals, guiding students and medical trainees through clinical externships and research projects.

    Dr. La Rocca’s expertise extends beyond the clinic and research lab. As a result of his efforts, an endowed Chair of Oncology Social Work has also been named after him in the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville.

    In addition to his cancer medicine endeavors, Dr. La Rocca also has a strong entrepreneurial spirit with participation in medical device start-ups, real estate endeavors both in the USA and abroad, and creation of Dumante, an after-dinner pistachio-based liquor.

    Dr. La Rocca’s personal interests include sailing, astronomy, and history, reflecting his lifelong curiosity and passion for exploration. He holds three passports and is proficient in English and Italian.
