Following medical school, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at New York Hospital from 1982 to 1985, serving as Assistant Chief Resident. He then pursued a Fellowship in Cancer Medicine at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1985 to 1988, where his work earned him the Public Health Service Commendation Medal.
During his time at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. La Rocca held a Senior Investigator position, contributing to clinical and translational research with a focus on drug development, including work on suramin, then a novel cancer treatment. His research and expertise in cancer therapies have been widely recognized, as evidenced by his numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and his role as a key investigator in multiple clinical trials.
In 1997, Dr. La Rocca founded the Kentuckiana Cancer Institute, where he served as Director for over 15 years. During this time, he led a range of clinical trials, many investigator-initiated and pioneered advancements in neuro-oncology, earning him recognition as one of the foremost experts in the field. He played a pivotal role in establishing innovative treatment protocols for high-grade gliomas and other complex cancers, contributing significantly to the field of oncology.
From 2012 to 2022, Dr. La Rocca served as Director of Precision Medicine and a Cancer Medicine Specialist at Norton Cancer Institute, where he was responsible for leading precision medicine initiatives and expanding clinical research efforts.
