“Never Stop Learning.”

Paul Stuart Burrell, MAIG RPGeo, is a globally experienced exploration geologist whose career spans nearly four decades across Australia, Asia, and South America. With a deep-seated passion for uncovering Earth’s hidden resources and a lifelong commitment to continuous learning, Paul has evolved into a trusted leader, mentor, and innovator in the mineral exploration and mining industry. His journey reflects a rare blend of technical excellence, strategic foresight, and human-centered leadership—qualities that have made him a valuable asset not only in the field but also in boardrooms and cross-border partnerships.

From humble beginnings as a contract field assistant in the late 1980s, Paul’s early career demonstrated a curiosity and diligence that would become trademarks of his professional ethos. Working on stream sediment and soil sampling in the platinum-rich terrains of New South Wales, he swiftly progressed through junior geologist roles, earning the confidence of industry veterans and expanding his skillset in geological mapping, RAB and aircore drilling, and geochemical analysis. His initial engagements, including contributions at Fifield, Nyngan, and Bumbaldry, laid a foundational understanding of mineral systems that he would build upon for decades.

By the early 1990s, Paul was an integral part of major exploration projects with Geopeko and later North Limited. His responsibilities included resource definition drilling and advanced geological interpretation at iconic Australian deposits such as Lake Cowal, E42, and the Goonumbla district, where he was part of the discovery team for the GRP314 copper-gold porphyry prospect. His work during this period marked the transition from technical execution to strategic project oversight. In 1994, Paul expanded his international credentials with a secondment to Chile—his first foray into South American geology—where he contributed to porphyry copper exploration near the world-renowned El Abra deposit.

With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision for agile consulting, Paul founded Burrell Exploration Services Pty Ltd in 1998. Over the next eleven years, he delivered high-value exploration services to a diverse client base, including industry giants like MMG, Northparkes Mines, and Antofagasta. His consultancy thrived on a reputation for precision, integrity, and a no-compromise approach to safety and quality. Paul led teams in designing and implementing surface geochemical surveys, geological mapping, and drilling programs across the Lachlan Orogen and Northern Territory, building a robust portfolio of successful discoveries and project enhancements.

His leadership capability was further tested and proven when he rejoined MMG Limited in 2010, eventually serving as Manager Exploration for the Sepon Mineral District in Laos. At Sepon, Paul oversaw a 70-person team and managed multimillion-dollar budgets through fluctuating commodity cycles. His tenure included transitioning several exploration targets into mineable assets, guiding the strategic closure of gold exploration, and spearheading project generation efforts that attracted international interest. Under his direction, Sepon’s exploration division maintained world-class standards and continued to deliver value amidst structural industry changes.

In 2017, Paul co-founded Savan Resources Sole Co., Ltd, a venture focused on bridging international investment with high-potential Lao exploration projects. As Principal Geologist, he led technical due diligence, stakeholder engagement, and regional project evaluation for a wide range of clients, including Australian, European, and Asian enterprises. His firm became known for its excellence in elevating exploration standards in emerging markets, fostering local talent, and building transparent pathways for foreign direct investment into the mining sector.

His dedication to ethical practice and geoscience advocacy was also evident during his time as a Board Director of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, where he served from 2006 to 2009. Paul continues to contribute to the professional community as a member of the AIG Registration Board Review Panel, ensuring rigorous standards for emerging geoscientists. His involvement in these roles underscores a lifelong commitment to mentorship, professional development, and the broader geological community.

Since 2019, Paul has held dual roles as Principal Geologist of Hinherb Mining Consulting Sole Co., Ltd and a founding consultant with Annamite Resources Holdings Pte Ltd, where he has applied his expertise to a wide array of mineral systems, including copper, gold, bauxite, and polymetallic projects. His strategic guidance and field leadership have been instrumental in moving exploration ventures from conceptual phases to advanced technical evaluations. With a diverse clientele spanning South Korea, India, Singapore, and Laos, Paul has firmly positioned himself as a cross-cultural leader capable of aligning exploration ambitions with global investment frameworks.

A respected voice in the industry, Paul has contributed to several scholarly publications and presented at international mining symposia, including the renowned Mines & Wines Symposium and Exploration in the Shadow of the Headframe. His co-authored works on the Copper Hill porphyry and Northparkes operations continue to be referenced in academic and professional circles. As a public speaker and thought leader, Paul brings clarity and context to complex geological themes, inspiring audiences with his deep knowledge and grounded storytelling.

Above all, Paul Burrell remains guided by his core principle: “Never stop learning.” Whether supervising trenching in the Russian Far East, mentoring young geologists in Laos, or consulting for multinational investors, his approach is marked by humility, rigor, and a drive to add value. With over 37 years of experience and a reputation forged through trust, results, and resilience, Paul stands as a beacon of professionalism in the ever-evolving world of mineral exploration.

Character:

Paul exemplifies integrity in every aspect of his work, consistently prioritizing safety, ethical decision-making, and respect for cultural contexts. His calm leadership under pressure and his steadfast commitment to team development have earned him the loyalty of colleagues and clients alike. In every setting, Paul brings humility and authenticity that inspire confidence and collaboration.

Knowledge:

With technical proficiency built over nearly four decades, Paul possesses unmatched insight into mineral systems, geological modeling, and exploration strategy. His publications and speaking engagements underscore a rare ability to translate field data into meaningful business outcomes. He is equally adept at mentoring others, ensuring that his knowledge is passed forward to benefit future geoscientists.

Strategic:

Paul’s career reflects a strategic mindset that blends field expertise with business acumen, enabling him to generate, evaluate, and de-risk exploration ventures. His leadership at Sepon and his consulting across Southeast Asia demonstrate an ability to align exploration goals with investor expectations. He approaches every project with foresight, ensuring both technical and commercial viability.
