Nsedu Obot Witherspoon, MPH, is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in children’s environmental health, whose career spans more than 25 years of advancing public health, environmental justice, and child protection. Guided by her belief that prevention must always come first, she has dedicated her life’s work to ensuring that children—our most vulnerable population—are safeguarded from the harmful impacts of environmental hazards. With her unwavering commitment, deep expertise, and ability to mobilize stakeholders across sectors, Ms. Witherspoon has become a trusted voice and a driving force in the pursuit of healthier, more equitable communities.
Currently serving as the Executive Director of the Children’s Environmental Health Network (CEHN), Ms. Witherspoon has spent two decades growing the organization into a national leader in policy advocacy, research translation, education, and community outreach. Under her leadership, CEHN has become a hub of influence and innovation, raising awareness of children’s unique vulnerabilities and building frameworks for long-term protection. She manages programs that span science, policy, and training, while serving as a spokesperson for children’s environmental health in countless venues across the United States.
Ms. Witherspoon’s path at CEHN began as a Communications Specialist, where her early work focused on outreach to health care professionals, grassroots organizations, and faith-based communities. Her ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in accessible ways allowed her to connect with diverse audiences. Quickly advancing to Assistant Director and then Interim Executive Director, she assumed responsibility for program oversight, staff management, and grant writing. In 2005, she was appointed Executive Director, a role in which she continues to bring vision, strategy, and impact to one of the nation’s most vital public health organizations.
Her leadership extends well beyond CEHN. She is Board Chair for Habitable, a Board Member for the Environmental Integrity Project, The United by Nature Initiative, and appointed by the Governor as a member of the Maryland Children’s Environmental Health Advisory Council. She co-founded and leads the Climate Equity Collaborative, co-chairs the America the Beautiful for All Coalition, and serves as Lead Chair for Clean Water for All. She is also a Co-Leader of the Health/Science initiative and Steering Committee of the Cancer Free Economy Network and the Childhood Cancer Prevention Initiative. Her involvement in these roles illustrates both her breadth of expertise and her ability to unite diverse stakeholders toward a common goal of prevention, justice, and health equity.
Throughout her career, Ms. Witherspoon has been tapped to serve on numerous high-level advisory bodies at the intersection of health, science, and policy. Her past appointments include the EPA’s Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee, the NIH Council of Councils, the CDC’s Science Advisory Board, and the Institute of Medicine’s Environmental Health Sciences Roundtable. She has advised the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, and multiple environmental health collaborations focused on child protection, maternal health, and climate solutions. These roles underscore the trust that policymakers and scientific leaders place in her judgment and strategic vision.
Ms. Witherspoon’s contributions to scholarship are equally impressive. She has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, reports, and book chapters on children’s health, environmental exposures, and public health interventions. Her work has appeared in leading journals such as Pediatric Research, Maternal and Child Health Journal, and Environmental Health Perspectives. She has also contributed chapters to books that highlight the intersections of climate change, children’s health, and equity, amplifying the importance of prevention in global conversations.
Her expertise has been sought after on stages around the world. She has delivered keynote addresses, lectures, and presentations on climate justice, children’s health, environmental protection, and equity in education and child care systems. From international conferences in Nigeria, South Africa, Taiwan, and the UK to community workshops and academic symposiums, Ms. Witherspoon’s voice has consistently elevated the urgency of protecting children from environmental threats. She has mentored countless young leaders through these engagements, embodying her commitment to intergenerational knowledge transfer and capacity-building.
Recognition of her leadership and impact has come in many forms. She is the recipient of the William R. Reilly Award in Environmental Leadership from American University, the Inaugural Center for Engagement, Environmental Justice and Health INPowering Communities (CEEJ Inc.) Environmental Justice Award, Snowy Egret Award from the Eastern Queens Alliance, the Rachel’s Network Catalyst Award, and the prestigious 950 Alumni Award from The George Washington University School of Public Health. Her life story is also part of an exhibit, American Dream Experience, at the new Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream Perhaps most significantly, CEHN named one of its awards after her—the Nsedu Obot Witherspoon (NOW) Youth Leadership Award—honoring her legacy of inspiring the next generation of advocates.
Ms. Witherspoon’s academic foundation reflects her lifelong dedication to children’s health. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology Pre-Med from Siena College and a Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Her graduate research focused on adolescent health, emergency contraception, and youth attitudes toward reproductive risks, demonstrating early on her commitment to vulnerable populations and preventive solutions.
Beyond her professional life, Ms. Witherspoon is deeply connected to her community and her family. She is an outdoors enthusiast who enjoys hiking, biking, swimming, and gardening. She dedicates time to coaching, mentoring youth, volunteering at schools and soup kitchens, and supporting children through various initiatives. Her role as a proud mother of four children grounds her work in a personal sense of purpose, reminding her that the fight for children’s environmental health is not just a professional mission but also a personal legacy.
