Matt Wetherell is a highly accomplished public sector executive with over three decades of experience dedicated to the criminal justice system, including more than 13 years in senior leadership positions. Throughout his extensive career, Matt has demonstrated exceptional skills in strategic thinking, operational leadership, team development, and complex problem-solving, making him a trusted and effective leader in government administration.

Currently serving as the Director of the Benton County Juvenile Department since 2017, Matt leads a multidisciplinary team of 15 professionals, including managers, juvenile justice counselors, outreach specialists, mental health professionals, and administrative staff. Under his leadership, the department has implemented comprehensive strategic plans that align closely with Benton County’s broader 2040 Thriving Communities initiative, emphasizing operational excellence, community engagement, and youth-focused programs. Matt’s ability to balance day-to-day operations with visionary planning has ensured the delivery of meaningful outcomes for youth, families, and the community at large.

Matt’s leadership extends beyond his immediate department. He actively participates in multiple statewide juvenile justice committees and serves as President Elect of the Oregon Juvenile Department Directors Association, where he plays a pivotal role in influencing policy reforms and advocating for improved juvenile justice practices across Oregon. His commitment to public service is further demonstrated through his involvement with the Benton County-wide Executive Committee and the COVID-19 Executive Committee, where he has contributed his expertise in emergency management and interdepartmental coordination.

In addition to his role as Juvenile Director, Matt has served as Interim Deputy County Administrator of Operations for Benton County. In this executive capacity, he provided strategic direction and operational oversight for four key county departments, including Records and Elections, Community Development, and Assessment, while managing the county’s Emergency Operations Center during the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership during this critical period showcased his crisis management skills, adaptability, and capacity to maintain continuity of government services under pressure.

Throughout his career, Matt has been recognized for his strengths in relationship building, public speaking, policy development, and budget management. He is experienced in testifying before legislatures and leading trainings, demonstrating strong communication skills and the ability to advocate effectively on complex issues. His approach to leadership is rooted in fostering teamwork, equity, diversity, and inclusion, creating a supportive environment that empowers staff and enhances community trust.

Matt’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Phoenix and completion of advanced graduate coursework toward a Master’s degree in Management and Public Administration. He is also a graduate of the National Association of Counties (NACo) Leadership Institute and holds multiple certifications in Incident Command System and National Response Framework protocols, underpinning his expertise in emergency preparedness and response.

Outside of his professional commitments, Matt values family time and enjoys outdoor activities such as riding four-wheelers, woodworking, and reading broadly.
