For over three decades, Lane Schaller has been a force at the intersection of engineering innovation, product strategy, and business transformation. With a career spanning multinational corporations, high-stakes startup ventures, and pivotal technology sectors, Lane has consistently brought a uniquely technical lens to complex challenges—earning a reputation for precision, integrity, and impact. His defining motto, “Define, Validate, & Solve Problems in Products & Systems,” reflects a lifelong commitment to analytical thinking, customer-centric design, and operational excellence.
Lane’s professional journey began with a strong academic foundation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He later deepened his technical acumen with a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Northern Illinois University, during which he also taught undergraduate courses in circuit analysis. His early career saw him join Motorola’s Corporate Research Laboratories, where he focused on pioneering work in audio and video compression. These formative years not only grounded Lane in emerging digital technologies but also instilled in him a rigorous, research-oriented approach to problem-solving.
From Motorola, Lane transitioned to PrairieComm, a telecom company that developed semiconductors for GSM/GPRS/EDGE mobile communications. His role evolved through engineering management and product development, helping shape critical mobile processor technologies that would go on to influence the global mobile device market. After the company’s acquisition by Freescale Semiconductor—then a Motorola spin-off—Lane remained at the helm of innovation, adapting seamlessly to the shifting corporate landscape while continuing to lead product definition and engineering initiatives.
Lane’s next chapter brought him into the dynamic world of web-based business and entrepreneurship. As co-founder and technical director of The National Law Review, a legal publishing platform serving some of the nation’s top law firms, Lane applied his technical expertise in PHP, Drupal, MySQL, and front-end development to build and scale a high-traffic content syndication system. Beyond engineering, he oversaw digital strategy, SEO architecture, analytics integrations, and advertising operations. He played an instrumental role in multiple platform redesigns, CMS migrations, and operational improvements that significantly increased publishing team efficiency and tripled ad revenue.
But Lane’s role at The National Law Review extended well beyond code. As a key partner in the company, he managed business operations, led strategic planning, and oversaw the full cycle of preparing the business for acquisition. His work on technical and financial due diligence was integral to the successful sale of the company. This marked the third time in his career that Lane was closely involved in the sale of a company, bringing both engineering insight and business fluency to bear in each transition.
Concurrently Lane worked at Knowles Electronics, a global leader in MEMS microphone technology. Over the course of more than a decade, Lane held roles of increasing responsibility—from Global Field Applications Engineer to Principal Applications Engineer and Product Development Project Manager. He worked extensively with clients in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, helping them integrate microphones into complex acoustic systems for mobile devices and consumer electronics. His efforts directly supported flagship products from brands like Apple, Samsung, and Motorola, demonstrating his deep understanding of how nuanced engineering impacts global product quality.
Lane’s tenure at Knowles was marked by technical leadership and innovation. He authored patents, published application notes, and developed abstracted acoustic models that allowed OEMs to simulate and optimize microphone placements in their devices. His test methodologies were instrumental in identifying and resolving intermittent, field-level failures, and he provided hands-on mentoring to engineering teams across time zones. Lane’s combination of system-level insight and customer empathy made him a sought-after problem solver in the high-stakes world of consumer electronics manufacturing.
After stepping away from these full-time roles, Lane has continued to make an impact as an independent consultant, advising businesses on web development, acoustics, and post-acquisition transition strategies. His recent work supporting the National Law Review’s operational handoff demonstrates his enduring commitment to helping organizations thrive in periods of transformation. He brings an unparalleled ability to translate technical language into business outcomes and vice versa.
Across all his endeavors, Lane remains a steady, strategic presence—someone equally comfortable writing low-level DSP assembly code as he is navigating a boardroom. His rare blend of engineering depth, entrepreneurial grit, and cross-functional leadership makes him an asset in both established enterprises and fast-moving startup environments. He is fluent in PHP, CSS, HTML, Python, and MATLAB, and conversational in French and German. His international exposure—gained through work in Europe, Asia, and Latin America—adds a global perspective to his work.
Today, Lane is actively seeking new board and advisory roles where he can offer both strategic guidance and practical insight. He is especially interested in companies operating in engineering, technology, web, or audio sectors, and is passionate about helping teams define clear product visions, validate their assumptions with data, and solve problems with precision. Though no longer seeking IT roles, Lane’s ability to span technical and business disciplines continues to set him apart as a trusted advisor, a resilient leader, and a lifelong learner.
