John Komer: Driving Growth, Defining Strategy, and Defending the Enterprise

Published on:

John Komer is a globally recognized cybersecurity and technology growth strategist whose career spans more than three decades of helping organizations strengthen security posture, accelerate revenue, and transform their market position. His journey began in the early days of the networking industry, where his rare combination of technical fluency, strategic insight, and sales leadership quickly distinguished him as an executive capable not only of envisioning new possibilities but operationalizing them at scale. Throughout his career, John has built divisions, turned around markets, expanded global accounts, and advised executive teams across multiple continents, consistently delivering measurable results for companies of all sizes.

John’s early foundation was shaped at Newbridge Networks, where he was hand-selected by company founder Terry Matthews and became one of the first employees in the United States. Opening the Atlanta office from the ground up, he was responsible for everything from designing the technical infrastructure to launching the region’s channel strategy. His ability to build credibility with VARs and end users alike led him to become a regular speaker at industry events, an approach that helped convert early-stage conversations into high-value sales. Under his leadership, the Southeast region emerged as the highest-performing territory in the company, a success that earned him a second assignment to open the West Coast office and transition the business toward direct global sales.

On the West Coast, John played a pivotal role in securing major enterprise accounts, including American Express, Bank of America, Motorola, and Phelps Dodge. His strategic restructuring of the channel ecosystem—selecting top-tier VARs, developing new sales processes, and ensuring full technical and operational training—resulted in a 35 percent increase in channel revenue and a 42 percent jump in average deal value within a single year. His work also contributed to the launch of Newbridge’s Global Account Program, where he closed the company’s first international enterprise deal and ultimately grew the Phoenix office to represent more than half of the program’s global revenue.

Cisco Systems recruited John for his deep experience in enterprise expansion and global account leadership. Leading a worldwide team of fourteen sales executives and eight engineers, he managed one of Cisco’s most strategic customer relationships and guided the company’s engagement with American Express through a period of transformational growth. John directed the strategy development, executive alignment, and technical oversight that grew the account from a $3 million run rate to more than $20 million in the second year. His leadership culminated in winning a landmark, multi-year RFP valued at $190 million—one of the largest commercial agreements in Cisco’s history.

John’s board-level strategic capabilities were further demonstrated when Inter-Tel engaged him to develop a business expansion plan aimed at increasing valuation, growing average deal size, and positioning the company for eventual sale. He authored a comprehensive strategic blueprint that recommended launching a new division focused on data networking and security, selecting vendor partners, creating training programs, defining marketing strategy, and designing operational delivery models. After the board approved the plan unanimously, John was appointed Director of the new Technology Integration Group and executed the strategy across sales, engineering, service, and field operations. His leadership resulted in rapid adoption, $5–7 million in first-year sales, and a dramatic increase in the company’s average sale value. The division’s success contributed to Inter-Tel’s strengthened market position leading into its acquisition by Mitel.

As cybersecurity became a central concern for enterprises, John’s career evolved into one of thought leadership and advanced consulting. His work at Nexus IS, Accuvant/Optiv, Dell, and ViaWest placed him at the intersection of emerging threat landscapes, enterprise compliance demands, and rapidly expanding technology ecosystems. Whether building cybersecurity practices for VARs, developing statewide public-sector security strategies, or closing multimillion-dollar deals for major financial institutions, John became known as a trusted advisor to CISOs and CIOs seeking both technical clarity and business-aligned strategy. His efforts consistently delivered triple-digit growth, industry awards, and long-term customer relationships rooted in confidence and measurable outcomes.

At Tech Data—later TD SYNNEX—John rose to become one of the company’s top strategic enterprise cybersecurity consultants. He designed practice-builder frameworks for more than 1,800 VARs, developed national sales enablement programs, helped build one of the first cyber ranges for partner training, and authored widely circulated security blogs and publications. His “Battleplan” methodology reshaped the way partners sold cybersecurity services, and his “Get Secure” executive outreach program became an industry-standard approach for MSPs and MSSPs responding to urgent FBI threat notifications. He was selected to write and present a program to, “Secure the Remote Workplace for Employees and Executives”, at TD SYNNEX’s Global Security Conference, Enforce, in November 2020 as a keynote speaker. He was also selected to write and give a keynote speech at a seminar to 250 partners of TDSYNNEX on the inclusion of AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning in security solutions. Most recently, as Global Director of Risk & Cybersecurity for Tata Consultancy Services, John expanded his impact even further. He developed relationships with enterprise CISOs across North America, guided cloud and security architecture strategies, and orchestrated complex RFP responses involving teams around the world. His ability to blend technical credibility with persuasive executive communication resulted in major multi-year security services wins, including tens of millions in closed revenue and some of the company’s largest cybersecurity pipelines. During this time, John also contributed to global AI security strategy initiatives and helped design solutions protecting IoMT and remote monitoring infrastructures across multiple industries. His influence extended internationally as he trained teams, built new markets, and created multi-million-dollar pipelines in the US, Europe, and Australia.

Complementing his corporate achievements, John is also an entrepreneur and founder of multiple companies, including Universal Reach and Kracken Cybersecurity Group. His work with Homeland Security and major U.S. law firms demonstrates his commitment to public safety and national resilience, while his investigative work recovering cryptocurrency fraud losses—in partnership with federal agencies such as the FBI and Secret Service—illustrates the depth of his technical and analytical expertise. Additionally, his extensive media experience, keynote presentations, and published articles position him as a respected voice within the cybersecurity community.

Beyond his technical and commercial accomplishments, John is driven by a deep personal mission: to help organizations grow intelligently while protecting the systems and people that power them. His global worldview, shaped by decades of international work, complements his passion for developing the next generation of security and technology leaders. Outside the boardroom, he enjoys hiking, golf, racing, and world travel—activities that reflect both his curiosity and his commitment to continual learning.
