James “Jim” Lowe is a distinguished power generation and renewable energy executive whose career spans more than four decades across every major dimension of the global energy landscape. With 45 years of progressive leadership, he has built a reputation as a forward-thinking strategist and a deeply technical operator, capable of guiding organizations through periods of transformation, expansion, and technological evolution. His story is one of consistent impact at the intersection of engineering excellence, operational discipline, financial insight, and international project development.
Jim began his career as a mechanical engineer after earning his Bachelor of Science from Union College, quickly establishing himself as a leader who could bridge technical knowledge with business implementation. Early in his professional journey, he demonstrated a unique ability to translate engineering complexity into real-world solutions, setting the foundation for the broad and influential career that would follow. His pursuit of a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University further strengthened his ability to unite finance, operations, and strategic leadership—an uncommon blend that became a defining feature of his career.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, as the independent power industry began to emerge and rapidly scale, Jim stood at the forefront of innovation. His work contributed to groundbreaking growth across the sector, where he became equally proficient in project development, construction oversight, operations management, capital raising, acquisition analysis, and strategic advisory services. During this period, he played a pivotal role in permitting over 17,350 MW of generation assets worldwide, ultimately contributing to more than 7,193 MW of operational facilities across coal, natural gas, wind, solar, hydro, and emerging energy storage technologies.
Jim’s leadership matured further through his roles at prominent global energy organizations, including General Electric, where he significantly influenced the company’s expansion into independent power markets. At GE, he helped develop the contractual services model that reshaped service agreements across Europe—an innovation that became an industry standard and has been widely replicated by turbine suppliers worldwide. His contributions included long-term operational partnerships, the launch of pioneering assets such as the Baglan 525 MW Advanced (9H) GTCC facility, and GE’s first offshore wind farm at Arklow Banks, each representing major milestones in international energy development.
His experience expanded even further during his tenure with Amoco (BP), where he contributed to major LNG regasification initiatives, infrastructure development, and strategic investments across Russia and Europe. These efforts supported the creation of more than 1,142 MW of generation capacity and laid groundwork for large-scale international energy ventures, including BP’s influential investment in TNK. Jim’s ability to work seamlessly across technical, commercial, and geopolitical environments distinguished him as a versatile and steady leader capable of navigating enormous complexity.
At Cogentrix Energy, Jim advanced into senior leadership roles that placed him at the helm of project development, capital formation, construction operations, and team management. His work contributed to the successful development of over 1,100 MW of coal and natural gas assets while enabling the creation of a gas-fired portfolio exceeding 2,000 MW. His tenure there exemplified his capability to lead organizations through full-cycle project execution—from concept and permitting to financing, construction, and long-term asset performance.
In the years that followed, Jim transitioned into executive and advisory roles that allowed him to leverage his expertise at a global scale. As President of UPC Europe and later Director at BRE Energy, he expanded his portfolio into renewable energy, sustainable technologies, and international project leadership. His work took him across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States, reinforcing his global perspective and strengthening his ability to adapt technologies and strategies to diverse regulatory and market environments.
Today, Jim serves as Chief Technical Officer (Consultant) for Impax Asset Management, supporting its €2.3 billion private equity renewable energy funds. Under his technical and operational leadership, more than 1,904 MW of renewable generation assets have been constructed and an additional 389 MW acquired, contributing to one of the sector’s most respected investment platforms. His role blends deep engineering proficiency with strategic financial analysis, enabling investors and operators alike to make informed and sustainable long-term decisions.
Despite an extraordinary career, Jim is far from finished. He remains energized by the advancement of new technologies, the evolution of global energy markets, and the opportunity to share his experience through board service and advisory positions. Known for a steady leadership presence, a disciplined engineering mindset, and a strong commitment to organizational integrity, he believes his greatest impact may be yet to come. His passion for contributing meaningfully to organizations—large or small, domestic or international—continues to guide his professional journey.
Beyond his professional life, Jim is an avid golfer and sportsman who values precision, discipline, and focus both personally and professionally. His international career has shaped a worldview grounded in respect for diverse markets, cultures, and operational realities. He remains dedicated to the principle that leadership is earned through character, competence, and consistency—qualities he has demonstrated throughout his enduring career.
