James B. Lamb has spent a lifetime navigating the intersections of tradition, science, and sustainability. Raised in the rugged high desert of southern Utah and the stark landscapes of the Northern Arizona Strip, James developed a deep-rooted connection to the land and livestock. Working side by side with his family on a multi-generational ranch, he witnessed firsthand the delicate balance between natural resources and food production. This early immersion into rangeland life fostered not only a strong work ethic but also an enduring curiosity about how grazing systems, animal health, and land stewardship converge to create resilient agricultural ecosystems.

James transformed this early passion into a distinguished academic and professional journey. With the unwavering support of his wife, he pursued advanced education at four respected institutions across the western and midwestern United States. His academic foundation began at Utah State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Range Science. He continued to New Mexico State University to complete a Master’s in Range Nutrition, ultimately culminating in a Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. His doctoral work focused on the effects of forage maturity on intake and digestibility—research that remains foundational in livestock nutrition and forage management.

Over the decades, James has built an expansive career spanning academia, research, industry, and nonprofit leadership. His early professional years were spent contributing as a Research Technician at the University of Nebraska’s West Central Research and Extension Center, where he honed both his technical acumen and research capabilities. There, he led studies in the Nebraska Sandhills region—one of the most ecologically sensitive and agriculturally vital grazing areas in the U.S.—developing insights into forage quality, digestive efficiency, and ruminant physiology. These formative experiences cemented his authority in livestock nutrition and range management.

In the private sector, James has served as a consulting nutritionist for several major feed manufacturing companies, including Moorman’s Inc., McNess Inc., and Cenex Harvest States. These roles allowed him to directly engage with producers across the western U.S., addressing real-world nutritional challenges while aligning science with practicality. He became known not just for his technical precision in ration formulation and forage analysis, but also for his ability to educate producers, elevating their confidence in applying evidence-based nutritional programs. His approach emphasized profitability without compromising ecological integrity—an ethos that has become the hallmark of his career.

In 2002, James returned to academia, where he took on one of his most transformative roles—building a four-year Animal Science program at Brigham Young University–Idaho. Through vision, collaboration, and relentless dedication, he shaped the program’s curriculum, mentored future agricultural professionals, and instilled a culture of excellence rooted in real-world readiness. Under his leadership, the department expanded to include a new Food Science program, further diversifying the university’s offerings and cementing its reputation as a leader in agricultural education. James also championed the development of new laboratories and teaching facilities to ensure students had access to the tools they needed to thrive in modern agriculture.

Beyond the classroom, James has contributed significantly to community and nonprofit leadership. His longstanding service on the Idaho Food Bank’s Board of Directors is a testament to his deep belief in food justice and his commitment to ensuring that rural and underserved populations have access to safe, nutritious food. His work bridges the knowledge gap between food production and food access—making him not only a thought leader in agriculture but also an advocate for social responsibility within the food system.

Following his retirement from full-time academia, James rejoined the feed industry in 2021, accepting the role of Livestock Nutritionist with the Intermountain Farmers Association (IFA). In this capacity, he leverages decades of experience to deliver cutting-edge nutritional training, product development, and producer support across the region. His impact continues to ripple across feed yards, ranches, and educational venues, where his guidance shapes both animal performance and producer confidence. James brings to IFA a unique blend of technical depth, relational warmth, and visionary foresight.

James has authored or co-authored dozens of research articles, abstracts, and publications in the field of animal science and range management, many of which remain influential in academic and applied circles. He is a member of the American Society of Animal Science, the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, and has participated in numerous regional agricultural advisory committees. His work has been recognized with honors such as the Honorary State FFA Degree and the University of Nebraska’s Ranch Practicum distinction—reflecting both peer respect and student appreciation.

At the core of James’s leadership is an unwavering commitment to education—not just formal classroom instruction, but lifelong, accessible, and transformative learning. Whether training new sales teams, mentoring young professionals, or advising producers, he brings clarity, humility, and rigor to every interaction.
