Gunnar Hubbard is a globally recognized leader in sustainability, ClimateTech, and high-performance/low carbon building design. With over 30 years of experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, he has dedicated his career to advancing green building initiatives and climate-focused strategies. As a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and a LEED Fellow, Gunnar has contributed to over 500 building certifications, including LEED, Passive House, WELL, and Living Building Challenge projects. Gunnar’s journey began with his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont, followed by a Master of Architecture (M.Arch) from the University of Oregon. Early in his career, he honed his expertise in sustainable design at the Rocky Mountain Institute, where he conducted groundbreaking research on green development and performance-based contracting. This foundation laid the groundwork for his leadership roles in advancing sustainability in architecture and construction.
As the Founder and Owner of Fore Solutions, Gunnar built an internationally recognized sustainability consultancy, working with clients across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Fore Solutions was instrumental in delivering landmark projects such as Maine’s first Net Zero Energy commercial building, the 5 million sq ft. CityCenter Block C project in Las Vegas attaining LEED Gold certification, and the world’s first LEED for Retail Platinum-certified project. In 2012, Gunnar’s firm Fore Solutions was acquitted by Thornton Tomasetti, where he served as Principal and Sustainability Practice Leader for over 12 years, scaling the practice to over 40 professionals spread between San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Boston, London and Portland, ME.
At Thornton Tomasetti, Gunnar managed sustainability initiatives for high-profile projects, including Logan International Airport, Harvard’s Science and Engineering Complex, Princeton University’s Integrative Design Process, and Stockholm’s central railroad station. Under his leadership, the firm’s sustainability revenue grew from $1.2 million to $8 million. He also played a pivotal role in integrating sustainability and resilience into the firm’s core operations, establishing climate action as a priority.
In 2024, Gunnar stepped away from Thornton Tomasetti and launched his consultancy, GH Climate Consultancy, where he continues to drive climate-focused solutions for AEC firms, NGOs, investors, and building owners. His current work includes serving as a Mentor in Residence at the ClimateTech Incubator at Northeastern University’s Roux Institute, where he provides strategic guidance to startups developing technology solutions for climate change.
Gunnar’s expertise extends beyond consultancy. For a 10 year period as LEED Faculty member, he delivered over 50 workshops worldwide, from Dubai and Shanghai to São Paulo and Stockholm, educating professionals on sustainable design and green building certifications. He has also served as visiting faculty at Cornell University, teaching climate-responsive design and integrated building systems to graduate and undergraduate students.
A passionate advocate for sustainability, Gunnar has contributed to influential publications, including co-authoring “Renewables are Ready: A Guide to Teaching Renewable Energy in Junior and Senior High School Classrooms.” His thought leadership extends to public speaking and participation in global forums, where he shares insights on green building practices, ESG integration, and mitigating climate risk.
Gunnar is deeply committed to community and industry engagement. He serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Yestermorrow Design/Build School and as Secretary on the Board of Community Housing of Maine.
