Dr. Andrew King | Renowned Orthopedic Surgeon, Pediatric Scoliosis Expert, and Medical Innovator

Andrew King, M.B., Ch.B., F.R.A.C.S., F.A.C.S., F.A.O.A., is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon, medical educator, and innovator in pediatric scoliosis treatment. With over 40 years of experience in orthopedics, he has dedicated his career to advancing spinal deformity care, medical research, and surgical education. His expertise, leadership, and contributions to pediatric spinal surgery and medical device development have positioned him as a distinguished figure in his field.

Dr. King’s journey in medicine began in New Zealand, where he earned his M.B., Ch.B. degree from the University of Otago Medical School. He completed his orthopedic training under the New Zealand Orthopedic Society and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 1978. He further refined his expertise with international training, serving as a Senior Registrar at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopedic Hospital in Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom. Driven by a commitment to cutting-edge treatment and research, he then relocated to the United States to complete a Spine Surgery Fellowship at Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine in New Orleans.

Following his fellowship, Dr. King joined LSU Health Sciences Center and established himself as a leader in orthopedic surgery, education, and research. Over several decades, he played a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s approach to pediatric spine care, serving as Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 2008 to 2016, Robert Ambrosia Professor & Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 2008 to 2016, Interim Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 2007 to 2008, G. Dean MacEwen Chair in Pediatric Orthopedics from 2005 to 2008 and again from 2016 to 2022, and Chairman of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans from 2005 to 2008.

In addition to his clinical and academic leadership, Dr. King has been highly sought after as a consultant and key contributor to spinal instrumentation development. He has worked closely with leading medical device companies, helping to design and improve spinal implants and surgical techniques that are now used worldwide. His industry expertise extends internationally, as he has consulted for two major medical device manufacturers in France and maintains strong professional relationships in New Zealand, where he remains connected to the orthopedic and medical device communities.

As a dedicated researcher and educator, Dr. King has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, authored book chapters, and led instructional courses on surgical techniques for pediatric spinal deformities. His research has provided valuable insights into the biomechanics of spinal fixation, scoliosis treatment strategies, and the application of innovative surgical technologies. Some of his most notable publications include studies on lumbar pedicle morphology in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, modifications of spinal peak growth velocity as a possible treatment for scoliosis, and clinical results of spino-pelvic fixation techniques in neuromuscular scoliosis. His work has contributed significantly to advancements in scoliosis treatment and has influenced the way pediatric spinal deformities are managed worldwide.

Dr. King’s expertise has led to invitations to speak as a visiting professor at medical institutions and conferences across the globe. He has lectured on spinal deformity correction, surgical innovations, and pediatric orthopedic care. He has also been an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society for over 35 years, where he has chaired several committees, including the Research and Grants Committee.

Throughout his career, Dr. King has received numerous accolades and honors for his contributions to the field of orthopedic surgery. He has served as Past President of the Louisiana Orthopedic Association (LOA), received the LOA Lifetime Achievement Award, and was honored with the prestigious Tiger Bones Award. For 15 consecutive years, he has been recognized among the Best Doctors in New Orleans, a testament to his expertise, leadership, and dedication to patient care.

Despite his demanding professional career, Dr. King is passionate about the arts and community engagement. A classical music enthusiast and accomplished pianist, he is involved with Friends with Music, a board supporting classical music appreciation in New Orleans. He is also an avid sports fan and a season ticket holder for the New Orleans Saints.

Now serving as G. Dean MacEwen Professor Emeritus at LSU Health Sciences Center, Dr. King is actively seeking board and advisory roles in medical technology, orthopedics, and healthcare innovation.
