Barry B. Gelston, Ed.D., is a transformative leader whose multidisciplinary career spans the domains of enterprise technology, nonprofit management, and progressive education. With over 30 years of experience, Barry is widely recognized for his rare ability to integrate systems-level thinking with deeply human-centered leadership. From revitalizing financially struggling organizations to pioneering inclusive educational frameworks for twice-exceptional (2e) learners, his work consistently reflects strategic insight, operational excellence, and an unwavering commitment to equity.

Barry’s early career unfolded in the fast-paced world of corporate IT, where he served as a top-tier sales executive at Vanstar Corporation. He managed some of the Boston area’s most significant outsourcing accounts, securing multimillion-dollar contracts and becoming known for client-centered negotiation and account stewardship. This foundation in complex systems and client dynamics naturally evolved into roles in software development and enterprise project management. Notably, he led development teams across multiple states in designing innovative energy trading platforms, further honing his ability to lead diverse technical teams with precision and purpose.

Yet Barry’s greatest impact has emerged in the educational and nonprofit sectors. After transitioning into education, he earned a Master’s in Mathematics Education and began teaching in student-focused environments, where his conceptual, confidence-based approach resonated powerfully with nontraditional learners. Recognizing the gaps in support for neurodivergent and 2e students, Barry went on to earn his doctorate in Cognitive Diversity in Education from Bridges Graduate School—where he continues to serve as faculty and advisor to doctoral students, as well as internship coordinator.

Barry’s legacy as President of Gifted Homeschoolers Forum (GHF) is particularly noteworthy. Taking over an organization in financial and operational crisis, he guided GHF from deep deficits into fiscal stability, introduced its first formal strategic plan, stabilized the board through multiple iterations, and launched mission-aligned programs that expanded its national reach. His leadership style was intentionally calm, inclusive, and aligned with shared vision statements—a style that not only turned around the organization but also led to his being honored with the title President Emeritus in June.

As a researcher and thought leader, Barry has made significant contributions to the evolving conversation around cognitive diversity and strength-based education. His doctoral work introduced Adaptive Connection and the Spiral Model of Development, both of which challenge conventional linear approaches to achievement in favor of relational, personalized growth. His Gelston Scale of Cognitive Diversity is a cutting-edge tool designed to assess and support learners across a wide neurodiverse spectrum.

Barry is also the founder of Mr. Gelston’s One Room Schoolhouse, a highly regarded online mathematics education program tailored to gifted and 2e students. For over a decade, he has provided individualized instruction rooted in trust, relevance, and empowerment—helping students rediscover joy in learning while achieving measurable academic success. His work has positioned him as a trusted educator for families seeking alternatives to traditional systems.

In 2024, Barry co-founded and launched Spiral We, LLC (originally named SPIRE), where he continues his mission as Principal Researcher at the Spiral Institute of Research in Education. His work focuses on the intersection of neurodiversity, leadership, and systemic design, bridging research with actionable frameworks that enhance both educational environments and workplace culture.

Barry also brings exceptional value to the boardroom. Currently an advisor at Bridges Graduate School and a board member of both the Massachusetts Association for Gifted Education and NAGC’s 2e Special Interest Group, he offers rare expertise at the crossroads of business operations, nonprofit governance, and neurodiversity. His unique strength lies in his deep understanding of giftedness and autism, particularly among twice-exceptional individuals who play critical roles in technical sectors like programming and data science. Through initiatives like the GHF Expert Series—which featured in-depth conversations with leading thinkers such as Joy Lawson Davis, Nicole Tetreault, and Dan Peters—Barry has also amplified public understanding of cognitive diversity, helping to shape national narratives around equity, belonging, and educational innovation.
