Alex Romeo is a rare hybrid of engineer and financial strategist whose distinguished career spans over three decades at the intersection of quantitative analytics, signal processing, and investment management. With a solid educational foundation in both technology and finance, Alex brings exceptional depth to every leadership role he assumes. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and holder of a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, he later complemented his technical prowess with an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), as well as earning his CFA designation in finance. His professional evolution from engineering and signal processing to portfolio management illustrates a consistent theme of applying analytical rigor and systems thinking to solve complex problems and drive long-term value.
Currently serving as the Director of Quantitative Analysis at Concinnity Advisors, LP, Alex is at the forefront of an investment model that believes companies with a good culture and exceptional leadership lead to financial outperformance. Concinnity Advisors is known for its multi-stakeholder philosophy, utilizing data from over 80 sources to assess companies’ relationships with their shareholders, employees, partners, and the environment. The trick is measuring culture and leadership. With multi-stakeholder and ESG data being qualitative and subjective in nature, Alex has played an instrumental role in designing the firm’s quantitative framework to incorporate qualitative data sources into its alpha model. His work at Concinnity underscores his core belief that smart, ethical leadership can coexist with, and lead to, superior financial performance.
Alex’s journey into finance began after over a decade of work as a software engineer, where he developed sophisticated digital signal processing tools for Naval sonar systems. His early work with General Dynamics and Structured Technology Corporation laid a solid groundwork in systems design, software development, and real-world modeling—skills that would later translate well into the financial arena. In those engineering years, Alex not only honed his modeling and programming abilities but also cultivated a methodical mindset that continues to apply to his quantitative investing skills today.
Transitioning to the financial sector in the late 1990s, Alex joined Travelers Investment Management Company (TIMCO, a subsidiary of Citigroup), as a Quantitative Analyst and later a Portfolio Manager. It was here that he began to apply engineering logic to investment management. His responsibilities included conducting backtesting analysis for possible alpha sources, developing stock selection models, and producing and analyzing performance attribution reports. Alex’s ability to navigate the complex language of financial modeling with an engineer’s discipline quickly set him apart in a highly competitive field. This culminated with him being promoted to portfolio manager and managing the Citigroup Capital Preservation Funds as well as the TIMCO US Mid-Cap Fund.
From there, he advanced to Batterymarch Financial Management, where for over seven years he refined his expertise in international equities. As a Quantitative Analyst and software developer, Alex created systems that ingested vast amounts of market data and processed daily rankings for over 12,000 stocks. He designed optimization tools to generate actionable trade lists, enhancing the efficiency and precision of portfolio construction. In this role, he demonstrated a unique ability to marry robust technical systems with dynamic financial strategy, enabling the firm to maintain its competitive edge in global markets.
Alex’s expertise spans a broad spectrum of financial domains, from equity research to software model development to asset management. He has developed models in numerous financial toolkits such as MATLAB, R, Factset’s financial data platform, the Bloomberg platform, Palantir’s early financial platform, SQL, Java, and C. He even designed and created the website for Concinnity Advisors, LP, as well as converting Concinnity to Microsoft’s Cloud platform. His Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation further underscores his commitment to excellence and ethical standards in the investment profession. This allows him to attack problems from a financial and technological, as well as ethical perspective.
What distinguishes Alex is his ability to take a raw idea, model it, test it, and see it through its design to a final implementation. He thrives in environments where complex systems are modeled, and where “fuzzy data”, such as employee engagement and customer satisfaction, is quantified. Invesment firms are always looking for new sources of alpha, but only look at balance sheets, income statements, and other standard sources of financial data. For Alex, identifying intangible data that is pertinent to a company’s operation or culture, and using it in a rigorous, quantified manner is the best source of new alpha.
Alex’s personal values also influence his leadership. He is a passionate golfer, having been captain of the MIT golf team. He appreciates the game for its balance of discipline, patience, and strategic thinking. These qualities mirror the values he brings to his professional endeavors—meticulous planning, adaptive execution, and a calm mindset under pressure. He is also an advocate of professional integrity and accountability, choosing roles and board opportunities where he can make meaningful contributions without compromise.
Now at a pivotal moment in his career, Alex is seeking to extend his impact through board service. With the freedom to travel and the flexibility to advise across industries, he is especially interested in startups and growth-stage companies operating in finance, electrical engineering, crypto, and other technologically driven sectors. His unique combination of domain expertise, strategic vision, and cross-disciplinary leadership makes him a compelling candidate for advisory and fiduciary roles where insight and experience are in high demand.
