At Purdue, Van led the development of the nation’s only degree program in Theatrical Consulting, enabling future professionals to gain both the artistic and architectural fluency necessary to shape modern performance environments.
In 1976, alongside partner Ted Jones, Van co-founded Jones & Phillips Associates, Inc., a consulting firm dedicated to the design of theatres and places of public assembly. Under his leadership, the firm quickly earned a reputation for visionary work and practical execution. Van guided projects such as the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center, the Jenison Center for the Arts, and the Music City Center in Nashville, among many others. His 20-year tenure on the USITT Finance Committee and participation in numerous arts and public service initiatives underscore a career-long commitment to governance and sustainability across sectors.
A full-card member of United Scenic Artists and a Fellow of USITT, Van is also a prolific speaker and educator.
